Dear Boys and Girls,
Good luck on your Trek. 3,200 miles is a long way to go, but you can
do it. Please make sure to stay healthy along the way. Eat lots of
nutritious food and get a good night's rest, each night. Pace
yourself and encourage your peers. I hope that you meet your goal -
I would love to see Paul complete his trek next year! I will check
your site often to find out how you are doing. I'll also let my 100
Happy Feet club kids know about your trek. It will inspire them to
keep running. Expect some letters from my club sometime in October
or November. WOW! What a great project you have!

Alright, you're
already a quarter of the way to my house! Just two weeks ago they
had the Hood-to-Coast Run. Teams run in relay fashion from Mt. Hood
to Seaside each running 4-6 miles at a time. Maybe one day some of
you can come out and be part of this Run. Good Luck and wave on your
way through.

Wow, way to go guys

thing about running across America, but not this detailed. We are
using Toe Tokens to track our miles and putting the classes into
teams of 2 or 3. I look forward to seeing your progress. Keep up the
great work. Way to go!!!

Hi
everyone!
I wanted to send my
'written' encouragement... even though you will be hearing from me
each day! I'm excited to persevere through the whole school
year with you and to see you complete this goal! It is set-up
so you will have to struggle through some difficult things
– for each
of you that will be different! My goal for you, besides
finishing the trek as a team, is for each of you to learn something
unique about yourself and to become stronger doing it! Remember
that this kind of opportunity gives you lessons to learn for life!
So never give up and never give in and keep your eye on the finish
line! Love you guys!

I am truly
excited to see each of you step out toward greater fitness through
this virtual Run/Walk Across America. All of you - whether walkers,
runners, or both - are a great example to others and an inspiration
to me. I look forward to watching your progress this school year and
am pleased to be involved in the organization of this wonderful trek. Remember, if either
class succeeds then you will achieve a great
goal as a team, and will have a personal satisfaction for your
contribution in that. Also, you'll be successful in sending me out
onto America's highways in 2006 for an actual trek across America!
Based on the effort I saw all of you give this week, I had better
get in pretty good shape! Go For It!

Dear
Vicki - I saw the article about the Russell 4th and 5th grade
classes embarking on a virtual run/walk across the continental
United States and want to congratulate you on a wonderful idea that
will benefit your students in multiple ways. Combining the great
physical exercise with geography, history, language and science is
truly inspired teaching. Please tell the 4th and 5th graders that I
am very excited for them and I know they will make it to Delaware
next spring. In the meantime, I'll be checking in to see how far
they've gone. Good luck with this marvelous project, Vicki, and keep
up the good work! Run, Russell, Run!!

Wow!
What you're doing is really neat! You may not even realize how good
this physical education is for you until you are older and think
back about it. If you start walking and running daily (or near
daily) NOW, you may begin for yourself a pretty wonderful LIFETIME
habit! ... Did you like Cannon Beach? It's beautiful there, huh?!
Bet some of you wanted to stay and play in the ocean and check out
all the interesting little shops! Your walking and running since
then have been mostly through woodsy, forested areas, sometimes
along a pretty stream. How was going over the mountain pass? Phew! I
can only imagine!! But, you DID IT! ... As you are leaving Hillsboro
and approaching Aloha, you will no doubt on your right notice
"Harvey" on TV Hwy. He's been in front of a place of business
(Harvey's Marine) for decades! He's an enormous plastic
man with a rabbit's head... I'm glad you're all doing
this. Our Nation (as a whole) is pretty unhealthy and pretty
un-pretty. So, thank you for helping to beautify America! I know
you're walking in Missoula, but wherever, wherever, WHEREVER you end
up doing your walking (or running) for the rest of your lives, walk
so much that you wear grooves in the sidewalk or track or path! Walk
until you feel it and if you don't, kick it up a notch! ... Walk
Away!

I'm
writing this mostly to the 4th graders. I have faith that if you
work steadily at catching the 5th graders, you guys can do it. I
have been a runner most of my life, and it has brought me a lot of
joy. To beat the 5th graders, start a tiny bit slower and as the
final minute of your runs arrive, work a small bit harder. As a
class, if you guys can close just a mile or two a week, You'll be
ahead before you know it. Be sure to thank Mrs. Staso for putting
this together. I wish I could have done something this cool when I
was your age.

Hello kids. My name
is Aaron Lohr. I am a soldier in the United States Army currently
serving in Iraq. I read about your virtual run across America in the
Missoulian. I think it is an amazing thing you guys are doing. I am
not going to say good luck on accomplishing your goal. I am going to
say congrats. See, I was kid growing up in Missoula MT and I know
you kids aren't just going to try and reach your goal. I know you
will succeed in it. So congrats, and keep up the hard work. Will
follow you the entire way. Thanks for the inspiration you have also
given me. Supporting you always...

Note: Mr.
Lohr also wrote the following note to Paul & Vicki, the Run/Walk
Across America organizers. We're sharing it because we want others
to know that this project is not only impacting the lives of
students across America who are doing virtual treks because their
teachers were inspired by our journey, but it is also impacting
people outside the field of education.
Mr.
and Mrs. Staso: My name is Aaron Lohr.
I am a soldier in the U.S. Army. I read the recent article in the
Missoulian online about the virtual run across America that the kids
are doing. I was greatly impressed with the idea and the enthusiasm,
in which the kids seem to have for the project. I am a Missoula
native, and was interested in using your idea in motivating some of
my soldiers in to getting up and running a little more by placing a
challenge to them - to try and match what your students do. I was
wondering how often your kids run, and how much time they spend
doing it? Also I thought that if the 4th and 5th graders knew that
they were racing a bunch of Army guys and were beating them, that
might motivate them to keep going. Anyways I thought it was a great
idea, and I was very impressed with how the kids responded.
Congrats, you must be a wonderful teacher.

My
class (in Portland) has taken the challenge. We have 23 in our class
and we think that we can do the entire 3,200 miles ourselves. We
finished our 3rd day of running and have completed just over 60
miles. I don't know if we can keep up with you but we're going to
try! Thanks to the Staso's and Russell Elementary. We're right

I'm
glad to see the new pacing chart. I was going to point out that you
had fallen a bit behind what would be needed to make Mr. Staso run.
All of you have a little catching up to do. I also expect that it
will be harder to do the mileage when winter really hits, so now
that you have had a few weeks to get your bodies conditioned, why
not set a goal of getting ahead of the target pace? I wish you all
the best of luck, and, if I can do it, will try to meet Mr. Staso in
Delaware. It's the state just to the south of New Jersey and I can
take a ferry to Lewes, DE from Cape May, NJ (the very tip at the
bottom of the state).

It
has been 7 weeks since you began this very long trek across America
and I am truly pleased with the overall effort of both classes. Next
week all of you will enter Montana - our home state! That is quite
an accomplishment. Within 2 months you have traveled over 600 miles,
starting at Cannon Beach, Oregon and running 101 miles across
Oregon, 343 miles across Washington, and 174 miles across Idaho. I
am seeing increased physical abilities in a number of students and
am pleased to tell the 4th grade class that they are ahead of the
scheduled pace for the first time since beginning this journey. The
5th grade class is not far behind and for having 28% fewer students
than the 4th grade I am VERY impressed with the progress that the
5th grade has made! At this point I don't believe that all of the
participants, their parents, the school teachers, or the community
of Missoula truly comprehend the immensity of this goal to virtually
cross the continent by the end of the school year. You are nearly
20% done with this trek and you will now be running and walking to
conquer the nearly 600 mile distance across Montana (which makes up
20% of your total trip). I will continue to cheer you on and I look
forward to our party at the completion of Montana - which should
occur in late December or early January. Know that what you've
accomplished so far has been watched by many visitors to this web
site. We are regularly contacted by P.E. teachers in America who are
interested in doing a similar trek with their students, and this
week a school in Florida decided to start a virtual trek program!
You are inspiring others, and I am proud of your efforts. Keep on
running and walking!

Hi
Kids: You're doing great! I'm a runner and I've ran a 5km (3.1
miles) race in just under 30 minutes. I'm just 7 years old. Let's
see if together you can get more than 210 miles in one week.
Keep up the good work. I'll be checking on you.
Matthew Baker
2nd Grade Student Benjamin Franklin School

Note:
Ironically, the total mileage of both classes for the week
that Matthew sent this note added up
to exactly 210 miles! The 4th Grade had 69 miles and 5th grade had 141
miles. Thanks for the encouragement Matthew!
I
am very proud you have reached Missoula; wish I were there to run
with you. It is snowing in the Western Washington mountains and the
ski season is starting. Keep running and you all will get to the
finish line.

Hi
There! My name is Nick and I live in England and I have just learned
about the fantastic walk/run you children are doing across the
United States, doing a few miles a week. Paul Staso told me about
the wonderful effort you are doing because a few years ago I
actually ran the miles from San Francisco to New York. I told some
school children here about what you are doing and they are just
amazed at how much effort and hard work you are putting in. I
remember from when I did the actual run, there were many, many times
when I got so tired and no matter how far I seemed to run each week,
it always seemed such a long way STILL to the finish at New York!!!
Maybe there are days or weeks where right now you feel that it is
still such a long way to go and the finish just doesn't seem any
nearer. Does that sound familiar? Have you felt like that? Well let
me tell you something. If this was easy - anyone would do it. But
it's not easy and that's what makes you children so special. Often
the easiest thing to do is give up. This wonderful project you are
doing sets you apart from many others and you can feel very proud, I
am sure your parents are. Believe me, if you break the goal down
to manageable 'chunks' and take 'one week at a time', you WILL get
there. And when you do, those few miles you do this week will have
made ALL the difference. Good luck and keep at it!

Can't
wait for you to get to Delaware. We are a small state - so you can
drive from the top to the bottom in about an hour! We are planning a
walk also. Maybe we'll meet along the way!

Hi
Kids, I guess last week might be called a "bump in the road." You
can't let it discourage you. I'd like to challenge you, so here's my
suggestion: Can each of you fourth graders do at least 2.5 miles
this week (and those of you who can do more, please do)? And can you
fifth graders each do at least 3 miles this week? If you guys can do
this, you'll make big progress to being back on track. Here in New
Jersey, we just got our first real snow. I like to cross-country ski
when we get some real accumulations. Do any of you do that? I hope I
can meet Mr. Staso in Delaware, but it's up to you guys to make it
happen. Apply yourselves every day and it will happen. Best wishes
and stay warm (by running)!
Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey
Mr.
and Mrs. Staso have told me what you students are doing, and I am
thrilled to hear it. Keep up the good work! Add up those miles! Make
my friend, Paul, run across America for real. I know he wants to do
it. You will be accomplishing something no one else has done! And, I
will help support Paul financially, when he runs it this summer.

Hey
guys....This is a really good way to combine physical fitness with a
goal. Some of you might not be good runners now but you never know,
as you grow and develop, you may become a track star. Maybe not, but
this program will certainly keep the cobwebs out of that thing
sitting on your shoulders.

adulthood. Good running!!

Way
to go kids! Keep up the good work, its hard to stay active in the
winter time. I am hoping for a visit this summer from Mr. Staso, if
you meet your goal he will be running through my hometown,

I
am so proud of what you are doing. What a healthy activity. Keep up
the hard work.

Hey
everyone, I want to cheer you on to keep walking/running. I KNOW you
want to see Mr. Staso actually run your route across the US. You're
awesome! You can do it! Keep up the good work!

You
guys are doing such a good job. Don't forget that if you can cross
Montana before Christmas break, (December 22 is your last day of
school) there's a pizza party waiting to happen. Be creative in how
you achieve your miles. Get an adult to take you "mall walking",
bundle up and walk outside, use a treadmill if you have one
available, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER: Check with an adult DO NOT go by
yourself, and be smart and be safe!!!

I
am so proud of all of you - what a great project! I know it's harder
now that it's turned cold and snowy, but I have confidence you can
make your goal. Keep up the good work and I'll be there to help you
celebrate when you finish your journey across Montana!!

Hello
Boys and Girls! I'm happy to see that you are going to run through
the winter. I think cold/cool running weather is the best. Running
keeps you toasty warm outdoors. I hope to hear about all of your
adventures. Keep up the good work! My class runs too - all year.

I
am encouraged by your willingness to run and walk day after day and
week after week. It was 32 degrees in Fresno this morning when I
got dressed to go outside for MY run, and I "chickened out." I
didn't have time to go out after it warmed up, so I just missed out
for today. After reading about YOUR dedication to the task, I am
much more likely to go out, myself, even if it IS cold. Thank you
for encouraging me, and I hope I am encouraging you, also.

Keep
up the good work! I know you can complete this. Since it's so
cold there, could you walk the halls instead of outside? We measured
a path of 1 mile in our school hallways for teachers to walk after
school one year and I bet you could do the same at your school.

I'm

from this kind of endeavor. Please keep up the good work, which
can be a terrific example to lots of other kids. I'll be sharing
your exciting progress with four schools' fourth and fifth graders.
At one of my schools, there is a running club. They just competed in
the Jingle Bell Run in downtown Peoria, which raises money for the
Arthritis Foundation. They will begin again in the spring and run in
a race that supports our Family House for families with children in
the hospital. You have set the bar for many other such groups and
given them an inspiring example to follow. I'm rooting for all
of you!

I
try to walk two miles every day, so I know that you can walk 2 miles
each week. I, too, live where it is cold and snowy, so I walk
inside. Did you know that if you march in place at a good pace for
15 minutes, you have walked the equivalent of a mile? Ask your
teachers if doing this will count toward your mileage. You can put
on five fun songs, march in place, and at the end of this, you will
have gone about one mile. Here's something else fun to try--march in
place during the commercials while you are watching TV. Keep track
of the minutes. You will be shocked to learn just how many minutes
of commercials there are! You could also walk two miles while
watching a half hour sit-com. Good luck!

You guys are amazing! My daughter is in 4th grade and I think
she would be so excited to try something like this! We are going to
check out your website and follow your progress. I think the biggest
challenge will be these next cold months...but YOU CAN DO IT!!!
I will pray for strength in your hearts and your legs. Don't give

amazing, interesting & challenging endeavor. You are truly
pioneers!!!!! Another approach: Encouragement!!! If you
encourage each other (including the other class) you will be able to
cross the finish line together holding your hands above your head
when you cross the finish line!!!! Get the good feeling that comes
with running and accomplishing something that no class has ever done
before. Keep It Up!!!!! You Can Do It!!!!

I
am SO impressed with your quest to conquer the United States via
your virtual run/walk. Keep adding up those miles. It makes me
proud to see that progress line moving ahead. The entire state of
Montana is cheering for you. We want to see a group of Montana
kids accomplish something no other group has succeeded in doing. Go
for it! We're all cheering for you. Go, Missoula, Montana! (Be
sure to put on a few extra layers of clothing as the thermometer
drops. I can tell you that -24 degrees requires many layers. My dog,
Tucker, became restless waiting for me to don all of my running gear
this morning. But what fun it was after we'd taken the first few
steps!) I might also tell you that I've been running for 35
years. I'll admit that on mornings when it's dark and cold I have
questioned going out for a run. However, I ALWAYS know I've made the
right choice once I'm outside feeling my body moving. Nothing beats
the feeling the rhythm of running creates. Happy Running and Happy
Holidays

Congratulations from
Napanee, Ontario, Canada! What a neat idea! We hope you enjoy every
minute of this challenge, and that you reach your goal of
walking/running across the USA by the end of June. The winter months
are cold (We know!), but if you keep your target in mind, you will
make it. We look forward to hearing that you reached your goal.
In Canada, we have many heroes that show us how to set a goal and
continue to reach towards it. Terry Fox and Vicky Keith are two of
them. We are sure you have many heroes you can look up to in this
way to encourage you to keep going even when the going gets tough.

Wow! This is very cool and a tremendous challenge, something you

sense of achievement you must already have. I'm an old childhood

weather. Be sure to stay warm though and drink lots of water
– Brian
Even though it is
below 0 you can still run. Think your in HAWAII. You can do it 5th
grade. Keep up with the 4th grade.
– Ray
Hey guys! I know
its cold up there. But the more exercise you do the faster you can
finish your run across the USA! And the faster you can not be in the
cold and stay home in your warm house!!! I know you can do it. Keep
up the hard work!

Don't STOP
running! You can do it! If I were with you I would keep running!!!!

Hi
fellow 4th graders. Unlike most kids, I am Homeschooled. That means
I have school at home! I came to your website to tell you what a
great idea this was! Keep working at it! Keep staying ahead! And
don't let them run away from you, 5th graders! What I've learned
from running, was that when you find the JOY in it, no one can take
it away! You can't buy it, you can't lose it! You will always
remember that beautiful moment when you find the JOY of running, and
the work becomes fun!!!! May God keep you safe, The Rave....Short

is a great sport, but it doesn't make Mr. Staso run. Keep working

Mr.
Joe Wenskus, a 5th Grade
Teacher at Dunlap Grade School,
located in Dunlap, Illinois, gave his students an opportunity to
send the Russell Elementary runners and walkers many words of
encouragement.
Thanks so much, Joe... and thank you students! Here are the kind
words that Joe's students sent to us:
Dear Runners,
Keep up the good work. You're doing well. Even if it is cold, try
your best. I know you can complete the goal. I'm in fifth grade too.
Run as hard as you can, and as fast as you can.
– Travis
Dear 5th grade:
You guys are doing a great job! I can't believe you are
running across the U.S.A! I wish I could do that. It sounds so fun.
You get to see amazing animals like ostrich, birds, wolves, and fox.
Even though you both are behind schedule, you can still meet your
goal of running across the U.S.A.
– Theo
You sound great!
What you do is an inspiration to us all! But especially
running club. Yes, we also have something like what you are doing. I
myself was in running club 2 years ago. Any way, I want you guys and
gals to know how great you are! Keep it up!
– Adam
Dear 5th grade: I
heard you guys are running across the United States. Well, keep it
up. I can't imagine what you guys get in the mile. I got 6 and a
half minutes in the mile I can't imagine what you guys get in the
mile. So you guys ran about 1,000 miles so far. Great job! Keep it
up. I know you guys can do it.
– Zachary
Dear 5th grade: I
am from Dunlap Grade School in IL. We have a running club here on
Tues and Thurs. I run 3.5 miles. Keep up the good work even if
its cold out. It is really cool what you are doing.
– Kinsey
Dear 5th grade
students: Keep up the good work. I believe you can run all the
way to the other side of the U.S. Just keep running and you will
make it! Good luck!
– Logan
5th Grade
Students: My name is Sarah. I'm in running club at my school too!
I hope you make it around the United States! Good luck!
– Sarah
Dear 5th grade
students: You guys are doing great. I'm in Running Club at DGS. I
have been in it for all the time I can. You are doing better than
I would have thought.
– Jesse
Keep on going 5th
grade, you are doing awesome. I run in running club at my
school. I can run up to 8 miles. I have run in below 0 weather
before, so keep on running. 5th grade, you are doing awesome.
– Maria
Dear 5th Grade:
We are at Dunlap Grade School next to Peoria, Illinois. I am in a
club called running club and we run almost 5 miles on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Some of us just ran a race on December 3rd and it was 3.1
miles. It was very cold when we ran. I ran it in 26 minutes and 20
seconds and I won 1st place out of the 10 and under group for boys.
Here is a quote that I learned "It is good that you might have
placed, but it is better that you even had the courage to start."
I hope you guys and girls keep on running.
– Matthew
Dear 5th Grade
Runners: So far I think you've done a great job running. You
have run so many miles. At my school, we have a running club. It's
over for the Winter, but some of my friends still run in the cold
temperatures. Keep up the good work!
– Kaitlin
Dear 4th & 5th
grade: Keep going you guys. What you're doing is amazing. It
would take me 2 years to go just 50% of the way. So I'm glad you're
doing this and keep up the work.
– Grant
Dear 5th and 4th
grade students: I think it's cool that your running across the
U.S. Remember keep your head up and keep running. Do your
best, and run hard. Some kids here are in a program called Running
Club but I know for a fact you guys run way more. Good Luck!
– Jessica
We are glad
you are running. We have a running club of our own. The guy who
is going to really run across the Country (Paul Staso) is staying at
our teacher's house in Peoria, Il. Keep on running.
– Brandon
Dear 5th grade
students: I think it is a great idea that you're running even though
it is cold out. I don't run myself, but I think it's a great hobby.
Some of my friends are in Running Club, and they think that running
4 miles a day is hard work. You run way more than that. I also
hope you'll catch up on your running. Keep up the good work!
– Elena
Dear fifth grade:
Keep up the good work and don't stop running. Being behind
schedule, it's hard to get back on track, especially when you're 74
miles behind.
– Cameron
I think it's
really cool that you are running across America. Keep it up.
– Sarah
Keep running! You
can do it. Keep running. Running/walking are very good for you.
So keep up your hard and good work! We have a running club at are
school. It is for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. I'm not in it but I
would be if I didn't have basketball after school. Keep up the good
work!
– Maggie
I have been in
Running Club for 3 years and people think 5 miles is hard but you

Now
that gymnastics is over, I expect that you guys will buckle down and
work at getting back onto pace. You're doing a fine job and I'm
proud of what you are doing. Just remember that this is a long term

school year (well, really until you finish the distance...I think
you'll do that before the end of the school year).

Just
wanted to take a moment and tell all of you I am very proud of you

talk to your classes and tell you of my walk across America to that

Hi,
Kids! I'm proud of the effort you guys put in before the Christmas
break. I hope you have all done your "running homework" over the
break. (I am assuming that you will be back in school either today
or tomorrow, like here in NJ.) It is now a New Year, you are
bigger and stronger than you were last year. Use that strength
and determination to get yourself back on pace. Keep warm and have
fun...but get the mileage in! Have a healthy and happy new year!

Wow! I just recently
found out about your project to cover America on foot during this
school year. What an impressive goal! I am so happy that you are
learning what a fun, exciting and healthy thing exercise can be. It
looks like you are right on your target pace which is excellent! I
am a runner and while I am not very fast and will never win a race I
feel great because I am doing something healthy for myself. When I
don't run I tend to be in a bad mood! My kids know if I didn't get a
chance to run and they will ride with me on their bikes so that I am
able to get my exercise in!
Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration and I hope you

I
am so proud of both classes and how you have persevered over these
winter months. Even while Mrs. Staso and I were away during January,
you kept on running and walking. We came back to Missoula and were
so happy to see how well you did during the P.E. classes, even
occasionally putting in additional distance with your class outside
of P.E. time. Your effort is truly wonderful. A few schools in warm
climate states that tried to mirror our trek at their own location
have since given up. They weren't able to stay committed to the
goal. The memory that they will have of their "virtual trek" is one
of quitting. However, you are enduring and staying focused on
completing this enormous task. You are succeeding... step by step.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and crossing the United States on foot
isn't accomplished in a day... a week... or even a month. It takes
time, commitment, dedication, perseverance, mental effort, physical
strength, and many other life-changing qualities. As you can see at
the top of this page, I chose a quote from Benjamin Franklin for
this week's "Quote To Think About". His words are, "Well done is
better than well said." Ben Franklin certainly was a man who got
things done. He was not just a man or words, but a man of action.
With each step you take you are telling the world "We will get this
done". Indeed, I believe you will. Run on, walk on, and keep
Delaware in your sights!

Dear
4th and 5th Graders: I am very impressed by the challenge you have
undertaken in virtually running across America. What a great way to stay fit and have
a lot of fun. I visited your website today and
noticed you are approaching Rochester,
Minnesota and are well on your way towards
achieving your goal. I congratulate you! I
certainly know the importance of staying fit
and am very pleased to see young people like
you taking a unique approach to daily fitness.
Your goal of virtually running across America
is a great example to your peers about staying
fit and exercising regularly. As I am sure you
have learned, the benefits of regular exercise
and staying healthy are numerous. By
developing and exercising healthy habits at
your age, you will lay the foundation for a
lifetime of healthy living. Along with your
virtual run across America, I would encourage
you to encourage others to exercise and stay
active. I
will look forward to watching your progress on
your website and wish you all the very best as
you work towards your goal.

Dear
Mrs. Staso and students: What a wonderful and unique program you are
participating in. Your website is very informative and interesting.
It looks like you are well on your way to completing the 3,200 mile
run. I just want to encourage you to keep up the good work and when
you have completed this program - keep running or walking! I know
firsthand the importance of eating healthy and exercising. I began
to eat healthy and exercise every day and lost over one hundred
pounds. My goal was not just to lose weight, but to get healthy. I
feel much better and I am much healthier - is is a "lifestyle
change" for me and hopefully this run will be for each of you too.
You are learning so much through this program; such as, how to
work as a team, the benefits of exercise and some interesting things
about each state you pass through. You will all be winners at
the end of this run! God bless you and keep running and walking.

It
has been exciting to see what you are doing at your school and I'm
looking forward to watching your progress. My name is Ruth Wysocki
and I have been a runner for almost 40 years. I ran for the United
States in the Olympics in 1984. I got my start in running when I was
about 10 years old, and I'm still doing it. I'm so thrilled to see
your school make running fun when sometimes others make running a
punishment. They are helping you enjoy something, set goals, and
create a memory that will last a lifetime. Perhaps I'll be watching
some of you run in races in years to come. My own son is in 4th
grade, and I taught middle school PE for 6 years. I always
encouraged running when I was teaching. Not only can almost anyone
run, but you can feel like a winner even if you don't cross the
finish line first just by accomplishing your goals and improving
your times. Keep pushing toward that goal. I have no doubt that
you'll make it! I will be watching your website to see how
you're doing!

You
kids have done an amazing job with this challenge. 5th graders, take
a few minutes and encourage the 4th grade students. You were behind
pace at one time. Let them know that they can catch up to pace. 4th
graders, you have some unlimited miles available to you, take
advantage of this and get ahead of pace. The weather is GREAT! Get
your teachers to take you out for some quick runs/walks during the
day. GREAT JOB, AND CONGRATULATIONS! Russell 4th and 5th grade

We
are all so impressed by these students. They have taken on an
amazing challenge, made it their own, and no doubt will reach the
goal that has been set for them. These kids would not be doing this
if it wasn't for Vicki and Paul Staso. I want to thank them for
creating this project/challenge, and all the time and effort that
they have put into it. You have created what will be a lifelong
memory for these kids. I also want to take this opportunity to
remind people that Paul is setting out on an amazing journey this
summer and support is needed. Take a few minutes and send in a
contribution or look at the lodging needed and see if you can help
with that. Any size contribution will help. These kids need to know
that their efforts have made a difference in peoples lives. Show
this by contributing to

things you have already accomplished, the great things you are
accomplishing, and the example you are setting for not only your

will finally be getting the chance. Running teaches you diligence

For the past 8 months
I've watched you run and walk each week, determined to reach the
finish line at the Atlantic Ocean. This week, the 5th grade class
did it! We are still cheering the 4th grade class on and look
forward to the day (coming soon) that they will also complete the
trek! Because the 5th grade class completed the journey by the
last day of the school year, I will now run their route across
America beginning June 23... for real. I am very proud of each
and every student who has been a part of this amazing challenge.
There have been many difficult days along the way, including:
freezing temperatures, tired bodies, discouragement, and more.
However, the 5th grade class has persevered to the finish line and
has become the first individual elementary class to ever complete a
virtual trek across the entire United States in one school year.
That is quite an accomplishment for 41 students! It equates to an
average of 78 miles per child, or the equivalent of 3 marathon
distances, within 8 months. That's great for a bunch of 11 year
olds! I will never forget watching the 5th graders cross the finish
line on April 25, with the local television and news paper reporters
on sight to capture the moment. There was so much excitement in the
air... and silly string! I truly appreciate the 5th grade teachers
(Mr. Creighton and Mrs. Kuchel) for encouraging the 5th graders
throughout the school year. The extra class walks that they
initiated truly helped the students to stay ahead of pace. Also,
none of this would have been possible without my wife, Vicki, who is
the P.E. teacher at Russell Elementary. She has done an amazing job
at keeping the kids focused on the goal. I also appreciate the
tireless and creative efforts of Stacey Rossmiller, Diana Sontag and
Martha Robertson... three women who have made this experience truly
wonderful. Throughout the year people have watched this trek via
this web site and there have been notes of encouragement submitted
each week from kids, parents, teachers, coaches, and so many others.
I never imagined that this "virtual trek" would gain such attention
and I am so happy that the 4th and 5th grade students at Russell
Elementary School have been such an encouragement to so many people
around the world. My daughter, Ashlin, and I created this curriculum
to impact the lives of 96 students at her school. However, our
little project has impacted the lives of so many people in so many
different locations! That's awesome, and we're amazed and filled
with satisfaction. Congratulations 5th graders and keep on
running/walking 4th graders! I want the 4th grade class to keep a
quote in mind. It is by Manuel Diotte: "Winning isn't always
finishing first. Sometimes winning is just finishing.” You are all
winners!

I
think most of you know that I ran in the Boston Marathon last week.
Unfortunately, I had a difficult race. Often it's the hard things
that teach you the good lessons, and I think that was the case there
with me. I'd like to thank those of you who wished me well at
Boston, your words helped lift my spirits at times. I'm starting to
feel pretty comfortable that BOTH classes will complete the trek. I
sort of wish that if you complete it, you could take the ferry from
Lewes, DE to Cape May, NJ and run through my state! (I don't know if
that would be allowed, and I expect that Mr. Staso wouldn't be
expected to complete it, even if you guys did that.) Now would be
a good time to start to think about what you have learned on your
trek. Keep moving forward!

A personal note to
Paul and Vicki. I have so enjoyed this run across America with the
Russell Students. The changes I have seen in the students since the

that I have seen develop, the positive comments from Mike Creighton
about the changes he has seen in his classroom setting. The list
goes on and on! As a former Trustee of District One I am so proud of
Vicki and very thankful we have her in our District. Especially

Congratulations also to Mrs. Staso for all

not least, congratulations to the fourth

In addition to making you stronger and
faster, it taught you a great deal about the
geography and history of our country. You
strengthened your legs and your lungs, but
your math and spelling skills grew too. Talk

repeat in your lifetime. However, as you cross the finish line next
Tuesday I hope you'll truly feel the satisfaction that comes with
meeting a very challenging goal. What you've accomplished is
definitely not easy, and that's what makes you so special. You kept

We are so proud of
each student that was involved in this year's Run/Walk Across
America program. All of you did an awesome job and now you will
always have this memory of virtually crossing the continent. It is
our hope that you learned something about yourself and that you
developed greater fitness and a stronger desire to be more conscious
of your health. You have inspired many people through your efforts
and you need to know that your steps not only impacted your own
lives, but those of children, teachers, parents, and others
nationwide. This web site will remain online as an example to other
educators of how to organize a virtual running/walking curriculum.
During the course of this year several schools around the country
have adopted our curriculum and are "virtually" trekking to various
locations. We are thrilled at the ripple effect our little
curriculum stone has caused in the pond of physical education.
However, regardless of how "successful" the program was, it is
YOU... the students... who are to be congratulated. Even though we
kept track of the 4th and 5th grades' progress separately, when
combining the efforts of both classes you took 13,440,000 steps...
traveling 6,400 miles. When examining those statistics in light of
the number of students involved in the program (97 kids), that
averages out to be 66 miles per student, or the equivalent of 2˝
marathons per child. And you accomplished
all of that within 8 months, running and walking in temperatures
ranging from below-zero up to 90 degrees. What an amazing feat... or should we
say "feet"?! Along the way you received letters of encouragement from
governors, senators, world record holders, and so many others - and
you gained the attention of the local media on several occasions.
You received letters from Canada, Africa, Europe, Australia, and
elsewhere. We heard from people who were inspired to get off of
their couches and start a walking or running program. Although we
never set out to have this program gain such attention, your efforts
were truly inspiring and the further you got across the country the
more people were touched by your determination and perseverance. In
years to come we hope that you'll look back on this and truly
realize what you accomplished as a group, and as individuals. We
congratulate you and we feel very fortunate to have had an
opportunity to be a part of this wonderful project. Keep running and
walking and be sure to always look for new goals on the horizon!

4th and 5th grade classes of 2005-2006 are in a word AMAZING!!! You
all set your mind to achieving the goal that was set and never

you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. 5th grade:
You got back on track at Christmas and never looked back! You've all

young people you are. While other schools across the nation are
trying to keep their students out of trouble, you guys at Russell
