This page contains the many nice notes of encouragement that we received during the 2005-2006 school year.

WOW!  Today is your big day (day one)!  Think big... Go strong... I'm here in Oregon cheering you on!

Dear Boys and Girls, Good luck on your Trek. 3,200 miles is a long way to go, but you can do it. Please make sure to stay healthy along the way. Eat lots of nutritious food and get a good night's rest, each night. Pace yourself and encourage your peers. I hope that you meet your goal - I would love to see Paul complete his trek next year! I will check your site often to find out how you are doing. I'll also let my 100 Happy Feet club kids know about your trek. It will inspire them to keep running. Expect some letters from my club sometime in October or November. WOW! What a great project you have!

Alright, you're already a quarter of the way to my house! Just two weeks ago they had the Hood-to-Coast Run. Teams run in relay fashion from Mt. Hood to Seaside each running 4-6 miles at a time. Maybe one day some of you can come out and be part of this Run. Good Luck and wave on your way through.

Wow, way to go guys and girls. Our Physical Education department is doing kinda the same thing about running across America, but not this detailed. We are using Toe Tokens to track our miles and putting the classes into teams of 2 or 3. I look forward to seeing your progress. Keep up the great work. Way to go!!!

Hi everyone!   I wanted to send my 'written' encouragement... even though you will be hearing from me each day!  I'm excited to persevere through the whole school year with you and to see you complete this goal!  It is set-up so you will have to struggle through some difficult things for each of you that will be different!  My goal for you, besides finishing the trek as a team, is for each of you to learn something unique about yourself and to become stronger doing it!  Remember that this kind of opportunity gives you lessons to learn for life!  So never give up and never give in and keep your eye on the finish line!  Love you guys!

I am truly excited to see each of you step out toward greater fitness through this virtual Run/Walk Across America. All of you - whether walkers, runners, or both - are a great example to others and an inspiration to me. I look forward to watching your progress this school year and am pleased to be involved in the organization of this wonderful trek. Remember, if either class succeeds then you will achieve a great goal as a team, and will have a personal satisfaction for your contribution in that. Also, you'll be successful in sending me out onto America's highways in 2006 for an actual trek across America! Based on the effort I saw all of you give this week, I had better get in pretty good shape! Go For It!

Paul Staso, Co-Organizer
Run/Walk Across America 2005-2006

Dear Vicki - I saw the article about the Russell 4th and 5th grade classes embarking on a virtual run/walk across the continental United States and want to congratulate you on a wonderful idea that will benefit your students in multiple ways. Combining the great physical exercise with geography, history, language and science is truly inspired teaching. Please tell the 4th and 5th graders that I am very excited for them and I know they will make it to Delaware next spring. In the meantime, I'll be checking in to see how far they've gone. Good luck with this marvelous project, Vicki, and keep up the good work!  Run, Russell, Run!!

Linda McCulloch
Montana State Superintendent of Public Instruction

Wow! What you're doing is really neat! You may not even realize how good this physical education is for you until you are older and think back about it. If you start walking and running daily (or near daily) NOW, you may begin for yourself a pretty wonderful LIFETIME habit! ... Did you like Cannon Beach? It's beautiful there, huh?! Bet some of you wanted to stay and play in the ocean and check out all the interesting little shops! Your walking and running since then have been mostly through woodsy, forested areas, sometimes along a pretty stream. How was going over the mountain pass? Phew! I can only imagine!! But, you DID IT! ... As you are leaving Hillsboro and approaching Aloha, you will no doubt on your right notice "Harvey" on TV Hwy. He's been in front of a place of business (Harvey's Marine) for decades! He's an enormous plastic man with a rabbit's head... I'm glad you're all doing this. Our Nation (as a whole) is pretty unhealthy and pretty un-pretty. So, thank you for helping to beautify America! I know you're walking in Missoula, but wherever, wherever, WHEREVER you end up doing your walking (or running) for the rest of your lives, walk so much that you wear grooves in the sidewalk or track or path! Walk until you feel it and if you don't, kick it up a notch! ... Walk Away!

I'm writing this mostly to the 4th graders. I have faith that if you work steadily at catching the 5th graders, you guys can do it. I have been a runner most of my life, and it has brought me a lot of joy. To beat the 5th graders, start a tiny bit slower and as the final minute of your runs arrive, work a small bit harder. As a class, if you guys can close just a mile or two a week, You'll be ahead before you know it. Be sure to thank Mrs. Staso for putting this together. I wish I could have done something this cool when I was your age.

Hello kids. My name is Aaron Lohr. I am a soldier in the United States Army currently serving in Iraq. I read about your virtual run across America in the Missoulian. I think it is an amazing thing you guys are doing. I am not going to say good luck on accomplishing your goal. I am going to say congrats. See, I was kid growing up in Missoula MT and I know you kids aren't just going to try and reach your goal. I know you will succeed in it. So congrats, and keep up the hard work. Will follow you the entire way. Thanks for the inspiration you have also given me. Supporting you always...

SPC Aaron J. Lohr
U.S. Army Operations Specialist
Stationed in Iraq

Note: Mr. Lohr also wrote the following note to Paul & Vicki, the Run/Walk Across America organizers. We're sharing it because we want others to know that this project is not only impacting the lives of students across America who are doing virtual treks because their teachers were inspired by our journey, but it is also impacting people outside the field of education.

Mr. and Mrs. Staso: My name is Aaron Lohr. I am a soldier in the U.S. Army. I read the recent article in the Missoulian online about the virtual run across America that the kids are doing. I was greatly impressed with the idea and the enthusiasm, in which the kids seem to have for the project. I am a Missoula native, and was interested in using your idea in motivating some of my soldiers in to getting up and running a little more by placing a challenge to them - to try and match what your students do. I was wondering how often your kids run, and how much time they spend doing it? Also I thought that if the 4th and 5th graders knew that they were racing a bunch of Army guys and were beating them, that might motivate them to keep going. Anyways I thought it was a great idea, and I was very impressed with how the kids responded. Congrats, you must be a wonderful teacher.

U.S. Army Operations Specialist
Stationed in Iraq

My class (in Portland) has taken the challenge. We have 23 in our class and we think that we can do the entire 3,200 miles ourselves. We finished our 3rd day of running and have completed just over 60 miles. I don't know if we can keep up with you but we're going to try! Thanks to the Staso's and Russell Elementary. We're right behind you.

Good job, keep going! I wish I could run with you. And I am running too. I know running 3,200 miles must take a long time and sometimes it's ok to take a brake. I wish you good luck. I hope you make it. I'm here by your side. I know your working hard to make it to the finish line. Good luck. - Rebecca

You aren't alone. We are all running with you. - Genevieve

I'm glad to see the new pacing chart. I was going to point out that you had fallen a bit behind what would be needed to make Mr. Staso run. All of you have a little catching up to do. I also expect that it will be harder to do the mileage when winter really hits, so now that you have had a few weeks to get your bodies conditioned, why not set a goal of getting ahead of the target pace? I wish you all the best of luck, and, if I can do it, will try to meet Mr. Staso in Delaware. It's the state just to the south of New Jersey and I can take a ferry to Lewes, DE from Cape May, NJ (the very tip at the bottom of the state).

Mr. Wayne Baker

I know we can do it. We have been doing great and I know we can keep it up. We have a great teacher, and won't stop encouraging us on. We can do it.

You guys can make it. Do not give up. Even if you are discouraged, even if you are a 100 miles behind. Always look forward when you are running and never look back. You guys are doing great!  Keep running, have fun and send my Dad to run across America next year!

I have walked from the Arctic Ocean to the Pacific and then to the Atlantic here in Canada. It takes stamina and determination. I wish you luck and encourage you to walk every day. The habit that you are developing must last a lifetime and by being active it will be an enjoyable lifetime. You live in a beautiful state and to enjoy it you must walk. Keep on walking.

Kelleigh
5th Grade Participant

It has been 7 weeks since you began this very long trek across America and I am truly pleased with the overall effort of both classes. Next week all of you will enter Montana - our home state! That is quite an accomplishment. Within 2 months you have traveled over 600 miles, starting at Cannon Beach, Oregon and running 101 miles across Oregon, 343 miles across Washington, and 174 miles across Idaho. I am seeing increased physical abilities in a number of students and am pleased to tell the 4th grade class that they are ahead of the scheduled pace for the first time since beginning this journey. The 5th grade class is not far behind and for having 28% fewer students than the 4th grade I am VERY impressed with the progress that the 5th grade has made! At this point I don't believe that all of the participants, their parents, the school teachers, or the community of Missoula truly comprehend the immensity of this goal to virtually cross the continent by the end of the school year. You are nearly 20% done with this trek and you will now be running and walking to conquer the nearly 600 mile distance across Montana (which makes up 20% of your total trip). I will continue to cheer you on and I look forward to our party at the completion of Montana - which should occur in late December or early January. Know that what you've accomplished so far has been watched by many visitors to this web site. We are regularly contacted by P.E. teachers in America who are interested in doing a similar trek with their students, and this week a school in Florida decided to start a virtual trek program! You are inspiring others, and I am proud of your efforts. Keep on running and walking!

Paul Staso, Co-Organizer
Run/Walk Across America 2005-2006
Missoula, Montana

Hi Kids: You're doing great! I'm a runner and I've ran a 5km (3.1 miles) race in just under 30 minutes. I'm just 7 years old. Let's see if together you can get more than 210 miles in one week. Keep up the good work. I'll be checking on you.

Matthew Baker
2nd Grade Student
Benjamin Franklin School
Westfield, New Jersey

Note: Ironically, the total mileage of both classes for the  week  that Matthew sent this note added up to exactly 210 miles! The 4th Grade had 69 miles and 5th grade had 141 miles. Thanks for the encouragement Matthew!

I am very proud you have reached Missoula; wish I were there to run with you. It is snowing in the Western Washington mountains and the ski season is starting. Keep running and you all will get to the finish line.

Ann Denzer
Tacoma, Washington

Hi There! My name is Nick and I live in England and I have just learned about the fantastic walk/run you children are doing across the United States, doing a few miles a week. Paul Staso told me about the wonderful effort you are doing because a few years ago I actually ran the miles from San Francisco to New York. I told some school children here about what you are doing and they are just amazed at how much effort and hard work you are putting in. I remember from when I did the actual run, there were many, many times when I got so tired and no matter how far I seemed to run each week, it always seemed such a long way STILL to the finish at New York!!! Maybe there are days or weeks where right now you feel that it is still such a long way to go and the finish just doesn't seem any nearer. Does that sound familiar? Have you felt like that? Well let me tell you something. If this was easy - anyone would do it. But it's not easy and that's what makes you children so special. Often the easiest thing to do is give up. This wonderful project you are doing sets you apart from many others and you can feel very proud, I am sure your parents are. Believe me, if you break the goal down to manageable 'chunks' and take 'one week at a time', you WILL get there. And when you do, those few miles you do this week will have made ALL the difference. Good luck and keep at it!

Way to go, kids! I'm really impressed by your progress and your commitment. You'll gain so much from this, and hopefully will avoid a lifetime of health problems, and stay fit for good. That would be the best thing you could ever do for yourselves! Take care, and keep up the good work!

Ms. Crawford also shared these kind words to Paul & Vicki (the organizers of this Run/Walk Across America):

"This is an incredible idea, and I've shared it with teacher friends already... but I also wanted to say I think this is one of the best websites I've ever visited. It's attractive and fun and very user-friendly."

To The Students and Teachers at Russell School: My name is Stewart P. LeBeau and I am 75 years old from Menominee, Michigan. I have been following your school's virtual run. I know Ann L. Denzer from Tacoma Washington and we send each other E-mail. In the past Ann told me that she went to Russell School in her childhood and recently she has been telling me about the virtual run you are taking across the USA. Though you  are not coming to Michigan, my home state, I still want to let you know that I am interested in your project and I hope you come to my city next year. I hope you have lots of fun doing this project and that you gain a lot of new knowledge along the way.

I can't believe that you guys are in Montana already! You blew right through Missoula and didn't even stop to say "HI"! Dear 4th and 5th graders at Russell Elementary: Greetings from the town of Lavina. We are pleased you are "virtually" traveling through our little town. What a great idea! We hope you all enjoy your trip. We will enjoy watching your progress on the web site. May your trip be fun, rewarding, and successful.

Wow! What a great inspiring story! I do hope the 4th and 5th graders make it the entire 15 states. What a great thing if all schools across America implemented this same program. I would love to start an after school running program for our local elementary students. Any suggestions would be great.

Can't wait for you to get to Delaware. We are a small state - so you can drive from the top to the bottom in about an hour! We are planning a walk also. Maybe we'll meet along the way!

Pat Guilday
School Nurse at Pierre S. duPont Elementary School

Hi Kids, I guess last week might be called a "bump in the road." You can't let it discourage you. I'd like to challenge you, so here's my suggestion: Can each of you fourth graders do at least 2.5 miles this week (and those of you who can do more, please do)? And can you fifth graders each do at least 3 miles this week? If you guys can do this, you'll make big progress to being back on track. Here in New Jersey, we just got our first real snow. I like to cross-country ski when we get some real accumulations. Do any of you do that? I hope I can meet Mr. Staso in Delaware, but it's up to you guys to make it happen. Apply yourselves every day and it will happen. Best wishes and stay warm (by running)!

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Mr. and Mrs. Staso have told me what you students are doing, and I am thrilled to hear it. Keep up the good work! Add up those miles! Make my friend, Paul, run across America for real. I know he wants to do it. You will be accomplishing something no one else has done! And, I will help support Paul financially, when he runs it this summer.

David Rodli

Hey guys....This is a really good way to combine physical fitness with a goal. Some of you might not be good runners now but you never know, as you grow and develop, you may become a track star. Maybe not, but this program will certainly keep the cobwebs out of that thing sitting on your shoulders.

Way to go kids! Keep up the good work, its hard to stay active in the winter time. I am hoping for a visit this summer from Mr. Staso, if you meet your goal he will be running through my hometown, Rochester, MN. Keep plugging along!

I am so proud of what you are doing. What a healthy activity. Keep up the hard work.

Hey everyone, I want to cheer you on to keep walking/running. I KNOW you want to see Mr. Staso actually run your route across the US. You're awesome! You can do it! Keep up the good work!

Gin Graham
Missoula, Montana

You guys are doing such a good job. Don't forget that if you can cross Montana before Christmas break, (December 22 is your last day of school) there's a pizza party waiting to happen. Be creative in how you achieve your miles. Get an adult to take you "mall walking", bundle up and walk outside, use a treadmill if you have one available, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER: Check with an adult DO NOT go by yourself, and be smart and be safe!!!

Diana Sontag
Missoula, Montana

I am so proud of all of you - what a great project! I know it's harder now that it's turned cold and snowy, but I have confidence you can make your goal. Keep up the good work and I'll be there to help you celebrate when you finish your journey across Montana!!

Hello Boys and Girls! I'm happy to see that you are going to run through the winter. I think cold/cool running weather is the best. Running keeps you toasty warm outdoors. I hope to hear about all of your adventures. Keep up the good work! My class runs too - all year.

Congratulations on your achievement so far. You should be very proud of yourselves! Keep up the great work!

I am encouraged by your willingness to run and walk day after day and week after week. It was 32 degrees in Fresno this morning when I got dressed to go outside for MY run, and I "chickened out." I didn't have time to go out after it warmed up, so I just missed out for today. After reading about YOUR dedication to the task, I am much more likely to go out, myself, even if it IS cold. Thank you for encouraging me, and I hope I am encouraging you, also.

Keep up the great work! You will all make it for sure! Try and remember that the journey can be as much fun as getting to the destination! Go Kids Go!

Keep up the good work! I know you can complete this. Since it's so cold there, could you walk the halls instead of outside? We measured a path of 1 mile in our school hallways for teachers to walk after school one year and I bet you could do the same at your school. Don't give up!

Lori

I'm an elementary counselor and I see many children who would benefit from this kind of endeavor. Please keep up the good work, which can be a terrific example to lots of other kids. I'll be sharing your exciting progress with four schools' fourth and fifth graders. At one of my schools, there is a running club. They just competed in the Jingle Bell Run in downtown Peoria, which raises money for the Arthritis Foundation. They will begin again in the spring and run in a race that supports our Family House for families with children in the hospital. You have set the bar for many other such groups and given them an inspiring example to follow. I'm rooting for all of you!

You kids are doing something that few children have every thought about! Congratulations on making it to the middle of Montana! May you find strength to continue strong during the cold weather that lies ahead. You are setting a wonderful example for us adults!

John Bradford
Missoula, Montana

I try to walk two miles every day, so I know that you can walk 2 miles each week. I, too, live where it is cold and snowy, so I walk inside. Did you know that if you march in place at a good pace for 15 minutes, you have walked the equivalent of a mile? Ask your teachers if doing this will count toward your mileage. You can put on five fun songs, march in place, and at the end of this, you will have gone about one mile. Here's something else fun to try--march in place during the commercials while you are watching TV. Keep track of the minutes. You will be shocked to learn just how many minutes of commercials there are! You could also walk two miles while watching a half hour sit-com. Good luck!

Run, run, run - it will help you to stay warm on these very cold days! I don't think you ran through Washington. Moses Lake is right on I-90 half way between Spokane and Seattle. Your speech therapist, Mrs. Thorne, is my sister! I am a UM alumni and love Missoula. Go, go, go!

Susan Beall

I am the Mapping / GIS Supervisor for Missoula County so I work with geography every day. Many years ago I drove this cross country route. It took four long days! I truly admire your courage and your determination to take on a task as large as this. Hang in there. Take it one day at a time and you will accomplish your goal! If you do, I'll print you a wall map of your route. Good luck!

YOU GO KIDS! What a challenging and exciting goal you have set for yourselves. I bet you all are having fun, getting in shape and learning many new things about our beautiful USA. Don't give up even though it's getting cold up there. I'm going to tell the PE coach at my school about your awesome idea. I hope she coordinates something like it next year. WOW! You guys are amazing! My daughter is in 4th grade and I think she would be so excited to try something like this! We are going to check out your website and follow your progress. I think the biggest challenge will be these next cold months...but YOU CAN DO IT!!! I will pray for strength in your hearts and your legs. Don't give up!!! Go for it! Hey you guys... Keep it up!!!! You can do it!!!! My sister, Sharon Hanson, from Missoula, sent us an article that described your amazing, interesting & challenging endeavor. You are truly pioneers!!!!! Another approach: Encouragement!!! If you encourage each other (including the other class) you will be able to cross the finish line together holding your hands above your head when you cross the finish line!!!! Get the good feeling that comes with running and accomplishing something that no class has ever done before. Keep It Up!!!!! You Can Do It!!!!

I had a friend who had a muscle disease and could not run, or even walk. She used to watch people and wonder if they knew how wonderful it was to have a healthy body. I think you students know how wonderful it is to have a healthy body. Keep the pace! You can do this!

I am SO impressed with your quest to conquer the United States via your virtual run/walk. Keep adding up those miles. It makes me proud to see that progress line moving ahead. The entire state of Montana is cheering for you. We want to see a group of Montana kids accomplish something no other group has succeeded in doing. Go for it! We're all cheering for you. Go, Missoula, Montana! (Be sure to put on a few extra layers of clothing as the thermometer drops. I can tell you that -24 degrees requires many layers. My dog, Tucker, became restless waiting for me to don all of my running gear this morning. But what fun it was after we'd taken the first few steps!) I might also tell you that I've been running for 35 years. I'll admit that on mornings when it's dark and cold I have questioned going out for a run. However, I ALWAYS know I've made the right choice once I'm outside feeling my body moving. Nothing beats the feeling the rhythm of running creates. Happy Running and Happy Holidays

Dear 4th and 5th Graders of Russell Elementary: With the cold weather now upon you, I'll do my best to send some of the warm Texas weather that we have during the winter up to Montana for your runs and walks - as long as you continue to do your best to reach your goal of running/walking across the U.S. Congratulations and Keep Up the GREAT work!!! We are all very proud of you!!! Best of luck!!

Great job so far kids! The toughest part of the journey is ahead, the newness of the challenge has worn off and the real work begins now! Keep your eye on the finish line and to achieve your goal it takes hard work and dedication. Don't stop now... keep moving!

I was very impressed by your trek across America. Next time you will have to go across from NW to SE and include Georgia! Way to go kids. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations from Napanee, Ontario, Canada! What a neat idea! We hope you enjoy every minute of this challenge, and that you reach your goal of walking/running across the USA by the end of June. The winter months are cold (We know!), but if you keep your target in mind, you will make it. We look forward to hearing that you reached your goal. In Canada, we have many heroes that show us how to set a goal and continue to reach towards it. Terry Fox and Vicky Keith are two of them. We are sure you have many heroes you can look up to in this way to encourage you to keep going even when the going gets tough. Try to imagine the feelings you will experience when it is June (warm!) and you have reached your goal. You're off to a good start, keep it up!

RUN FOR THE PIZZA GUYS! You guys can still get the pizza if you turn in the yellow slips! Make for the border (Montana that is! Even though heading South would be warmer!) and get there before Christmas break. PTA will furnish the pizza if you do the miles! You guys are AWESOME!!! Remember: Running/walking is a good way to keep warm!

Hi, kids, I just read about your efforts, courtesy of Russ Fletcher. Wow! This is very cool and a tremendous challenge, something you will remember for the rest of your lives. So hang in there! Who would have known it would get so cold on us. Drat. Cover those heads, ears and hands and keep it up! I'm in Bozeman and I see you have run right past us. I am alerting some friends and our school superintendent to your website, and hope you will receive some more Bozeman "mail."

I am so impressed! This is an excellent endeavor by you all. What a sense of achievement you must already have. I'm an old childhood friend of Mrs. Staso and she's always been an impressive and wonderful person, but this program shows how much she cares for you all and how much confidence she has in all of you to accomplish this mighty task. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching your progress through the end of school. GREAT JOB ALL OF YOU!

Even though it is below 0 you can still run. Think your in HAWAII. You can do it 5th grade. Keep up with the 4th grade.

Dear Russell Elementary 4th & 5th Graders: The value of fitness is an important lesson to learn early on. That's why I was so excited when I heard about your Run Across America. It's great that you have set a goal and are reaching for it with all you have. I have no doubts that you will achieve it. Good job and good luck!

Brian Schweitzer, Governor of the State of Montana

Not only are you kids getting fit and showing the "I CAN DO IT" attitude, you are learning about our wonderful country the USA! Nothing like "active" learning. Keep it up! You ROCK!!

Hi fellow 4th graders. Unlike most kids, I am Homeschooled. That means I have school at home! I came to your website to tell you what a great idea this was! Keep working at it! Keep staying ahead! And don't let them run away from you, 5th graders! What I've learned from running, was that when you find the JOY in it, no one can take it away! You can't buy it, you can't lose it! You will always remember that beautiful moment when you find the JOY of running, and the work becomes fun!!!! May God keep you safe, The Rave....Short for Raven!

Hey kids, it's me. I know its been awhile but believe it or not we soldiers out here are still running. Its been busy for us. We will be home soon. Keep running and remember we are with you. Can't wait to see you this spring when I make it back to Montana. I only hope I am able to keep up with you speed demons. Never quit - you guys can do it!

SPC Aaron Lohr, U.S. Army Operations Specialist

Awesome! You'll see some beautiful sites on your virtual run. Don't forget to enjoy the view. There's always something new and exciting to see. And don't forget to have fun doing it.

Kim Mansukhani

Gymnastics is a great sport, but it doesn't make Mr. Staso run. Keep working towards the goal. Do any of you snowshoe or cross country ski? Does that count towards the mileage? Try, if you can, to make up some of the mileage you're still behind this week.

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Mr. Joe Wenskus, a 5th Grade Teacher at Dunlap Grade School, located in Dunlap, Illinois, gave his students an opportunity to send the Russell Elementary runners and walkers many words of encouragement. Thanks so much, Joe... and thank you students! Here are the kind words that Joe's students sent to us:

Dear Runners, Keep up the good work. You're doing well. Even if it is cold, try your best. I know you can complete the goal. I'm in fifth grade too. Run as hard as you can, and as fast as you can.

   – Travis

Dear 5th grade: You guys are doing a great job! I can't believe you are running across the U.S.A! I wish I could do that. It sounds so fun. You get to see amazing animals like ostrich, birds, wolves, and fox. Even though you both are behind schedule, you can still meet your goal of running across the U.S.A.

   – Theo

You sound great! What you do is an inspiration to us all! But especially running club. Yes, we also have something like what you are doing. I myself was in running club 2 years ago. Any way, I want you guys and gals to know how great you are! Keep it up!

   – Adam

Dear 5th grade: I heard you guys are running across the United States. Well, keep it up. I can't imagine what you guys get in the mile. I got 6 and a half minutes in the mile I can't imagine what you guys get in the mile. So you guys ran about 1,000 miles so far. Great job! Keep it up. I know you guys can do it.

   – Zachary

Dear 5th grade: I am from Dunlap Grade School in IL. We have a running club here on Tues and Thurs. I run 3.5 miles. Keep up the good work even if its cold out. It is really cool what you are doing.

   – Kinsey

Dear 5th grade students: Keep up the good work. I believe you can run all the way to the other side of the U.S. Just keep running and you will make it! Good luck!

   – Logan

5th Grade Students: My name is Sarah. I'm in running club at my school too! I hope you make it around the United States! Good luck!

   – Sarah

Dear 5th grade students: You guys are doing great. I'm in Running Club at DGS. I have been in it for all the time I can. You are doing better than I would have thought.

   – Jesse

Keep on going 5th grade, you are doing awesome. I run in running club at my school. I can run up to 8 miles. I have run in below 0 weather before, so keep on running. 5th grade, you are doing awesome.

   – Maria

Dear 5th Grade: We are at Dunlap Grade School next to Peoria, Illinois. I am in a club called running club and we run almost 5 miles on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some of us just ran a race on December 3rd and it was 3.1 miles. It was very cold when we ran. I ran it in 26 minutes and 20 seconds and I won 1st place out of the 10 and under group for boys. Here is a quote that I learned "It is good that you might have placed, but it is better that you even had the courage to start." I hope you guys and girls keep on running.

   – Matthew

Dear 5th Grade Runners: So far I think you've done a great job running. You have run so many miles. At my school, we have a running club. It's over for the Winter, but some of my friends still run in the cold temperatures. Keep up the good work!

   – Kaitlin

Dear 4th & 5th grade: Keep going you guys. What you're doing is amazing. It would take me 2 years to go just 50% of the way. So I'm glad you're doing this and keep up the work.

   – Grant

Dear 5th and 4th grade students: I think it's cool that your running across the U.S.  Remember keep your head up and keep running. Do your best, and run hard. Some kids here are in a program called Running Club but I know for a fact you guys run way more. Good Luck!

   – Jessica

We are glad you are running. We have a running club of our own. The guy who is going to really run across the Country (Paul Staso) is staying at our teacher's house in Peoria, Il. Keep on running.

   – Brandon

Dear 5th grade students: I think it is a great idea that you're running even though it is cold out. I don't run myself, but I think it's a great hobby. Some of my friends are in Running Club, and they think that running 4 miles a day is hard work. You run way more than that. I also hope you'll catch up on your running. Keep up the good work!

   – Elena

Dear fifth grade: Keep up the good work and don't stop running. Being behind schedule, it's hard to get back on track, especially when you're 74 miles behind.

   – Cameron

I think it's really cool that you are running across America. Keep it up.

   – Sarah

Keep running! You can do it. Keep running. Running/walking are very good for you. So keep up your hard and good work! We have a running club at are school. It is for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. I'm not in it but I would be if I didn't have basketball after school. Keep up the good work!

   – Maggie

I have been in Running Club for 3 years and people think 5 miles is hard but you guys run more. KEEP ON GOING.

   – Evan

5th grade students: My name is Minnie and I'm in 5th grade too. I am in running club. I am sure I haven't ran as many miles as you probably have. Keep up the good work. I know you can do it!

   – Minnie

Dear 5th Grade Runners: It takes a lot of work to do what you are doing. I think you all are doing a wonderful job. Keep running until you reach your goal!!!

   – Emily

Keep on running and don't slow down. I hope you get to the east coast successfully.

   – Jake

Keep running and keep up the good work. I hope you will make it successfully.

   – Seth

I'm 27 and have been overweight my entire life. I'm currently training for a half marathon, have lost 60 pounds and wish I would have started earlier in life to be active and healthy. Thank you for what you are doing in the lives of children.

Now that gymnastics is over, I expect that you guys will buckle down and work at getting back onto pace. You're doing a fine job and I'm proud of what you are doing. Just remember that this is a long term commitment, you have to keep working at it until the end of the school year (well, really until you finish the distance...I think you'll do that before the end of the school year).

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Keep it up kids. You can do it! I started walking/running at the age of 46 because I didn't know what you guys know now. Exercise does a body good!!!

I ran across your website when I started to plan my walk across America that hopefully will begin this April 1st, 2006. One of my routes I am contemplating actually comes through Missoula. If I decide to take this route I would love to stop by and talk to your classes and tell you of my walk across America to that point. Best wishes!

Hi Kids! I want to wish you a very good New Year! By the time you read this, you'll have probably passed through a town that has my last name. You're doing a good job. I can't believe how big Montana is! Keep going and you'll soon be done with North Dakota, too!

WOW! What a fantastic idea. Congratulations to all the kids at Russell Elementary. You must all be so proud of yourselves. All of us here in Australia are on our Christmas holiday break but I will have all my kids log on after the vacation and cheer you on to your goal. What an inspiration. Cheering you on from downunder! Keep putting one foot in front of the other and good luck.

Wow, you kids rock! You are even motivating me to get off my couch and get physical. Have a great run and stay strong and motivated. Peace out!

Scott Rossmiller

Hi, Kids! I'm proud of the effort you guys put in before the Christmas break. I hope you have all done your "running homework" over the break. (I am assuming that you will be back in school either today or tomorrow, like here in NJ.) It is now a New Year, you are bigger and stronger than you were last year. Use that strength and determination to get yourself back on pace. Keep warm and have fun...but get the mileage in! Have a healthy and happy new year! Work together to make Mr. Staso run.

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Hey kids keep up the good work. I am back home and my entire company went on a 7 mile run this morning for you. That's a total of 630 miles between the 90 of us that went running. I hope you enjoy your winter break and remember keep running.

I am so encouraged by your progress. I am preparing for a race at the end of February and you have encouraged me to give it the extra umph for the next 2 months. I'll be cheering for you all to meet your goal. If anyone needs a running buddy let me know.

You guys are awesome! The motivation that you have shown during the last few weeks is nothing short of amazing. (mind you this has been during the coldest weather that Missoula has experienced this year.) You are truly amazing kids and if you all keep up this pace you will finish ahead of schedule. Keep on running/walking! You guys ROCK!!

Diana Sontag

Hi Kids, I was surfing the Net and ran across this request (for encouragement). I am really impressed! I have friends in Missoula and I know it gets pretty cold there. I'm 76 years old and am training for a marathon. You can do anything you make up your mind to do -- go for it. I'll stay in touch with Mrs. Staso for updates. You guys are AWESOME!!!!!!!!

Way to pack on the miles over vacation instead of the pounds!! You guys are amazing and will no doubt reach your goal. If the cold weather didn't slow you down nothing will. Take a look at how far you've come in the time you've been doing this and you'll realize how well you all are doing! KEEP IT UP! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

Dear Kids, It is my sincere pleasure to congratulate you as you approach the half-way mark on your run/walk across America! I understand that a lot of hard work has gotten you to this point, and I wish you the best as you keep working towards your goal. Running is one of my favorite hobbies and I am so glad to see young Montanans enjoying it, too. I visited your website and am amazed at your progress! Hi everyone! I just finished reading the web site and am so impressed and proud of you! Great efforts in getting mileage and it shows! You are almost to the halfway point!!! Keep at it and remember everyone's miles count! Miss you all!

Mrs. Vicki Staso
The Participating Students' P.E. Teacher
Missoula, Montana (but currently in San Luis Obispo, California)

Note: Many of you are aware that the students' P.E. teacher, Mrs. Staso, had to leave Missoula, Montana on January 6th to be at her mother's side in California. Her mother has terminal cancer and Mrs. Staso went to be with her during her final days/weeks. More details are in our December 24 entry.

While Mrs. Staso is away, you must keep working towards completing this trek. This is especially true for the fourth graders, it is really important that you get caught up. I'd also like to congratulate the fifth graders at the job they did in getting caught up and ahead of pace. You've been doing really well, but don't get complacent.

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Wow! What amazing kids you are!!! As a runner and a mom of five kids you certainly have inspired me. I have been trying to get my kids motivated to begin a running program and plan to you use you guys as role models. Keep up the great work! Don't forget to stretch. Run fast and free.

Jan Bixler

Wow! I just recently found out about your project to cover America on foot during this school year. What an impressive goal! I am so happy that you are learning what a fun, exciting and healthy thing exercise can be. It looks like you are right on your target pace which is excellent! I am a runner and while I am not very fast and will never win a race I feel great because I am doing something healthy for myself. When I don't run I tend to be in a bad mood! My kids know if I didn't get a chance to run and they will ride with me on their bikes so that I am able to get my exercise in! Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration and I hope you will continue your physical activity long past this year! I will keep checking back on your progress because I can't wait to see you reach your final goal. You won't believe what an incredible feeling it is!

Katrina Mullen
Hudson, Ohio

Kids, I am hoping that you are getting these e-mails in Mrs. Staso's absence. I hope you are keeping at doing your mileage. Remember that the pace required to finish keeps advancing whether the Stasos are checking on you or not. Keep moving forward!

Wayne Baker

Dear Everyone! I am so amazed at your perseverance and dedication while I have been in California with my mom. By "doing the work", it will be much easier for me to return and pick-up where I left off! You have encouraged me through this difficult time by being steadfast and continuing on your journey... which you have made your own! I'm looking forward to being back with you and I hear we have some 'partying' to do! You each are awesome and I miss you!

Hey everyone. Been keeping tabs on you and you are doing an excellent job. The Guys here all coming back from their vacation time this week and we will pick up where we left off. I see we have a lot of miles to cover to catch up with you. We will make up the distance and will be sending pictures of us running here in Germany now. I am getting close to being able to come visit you and look forward to meeting all of you and running with you. If you will still let me. Keep up the good work, and will see you all soon.

I am so proud of both classes and how you have persevered over these winter months. Even while Mrs. Staso and I were away during January, you kept on running and walking. We came back to Missoula and were so happy to see how well you did during the P.E. classes, even occasionally putting in additional distance with your class outside of P.E. time. Your effort is truly wonderful. A few schools in warm climate states that tried to mirror our trek at their own location have since given up. They weren't able to stay committed to the goal. The memory that they will have of their "virtual trek" is one of quitting. However, you are enduring and staying focused on completing this enormous task. You are succeeding... step by step. Rome wasn't built in a day, and crossing the United States on foot isn't accomplished in a day... a week... or even a month. It takes time, commitment, dedication, perseverance, mental effort, physical strength, and many other life-changing qualities. As you can see at the top of this page, I chose a quote from Benjamin Franklin for this week's "Quote To Think About". His words are, "Well done is better than well said." Ben Franklin certainly was a man who got things done. He was not just a man or words, but a man of action. With each step you take you are telling the world "We will get this done". Indeed, I believe you will. Run on, walk on, and keep Delaware in your sights!

Paul Staso, Co-Organizer
Run/Walk Across America
Missoula, Montana

Dear 4th and 5th Graders: I am very impressed by the challenge you have undertaken in virtually running across America. What a great way to stay fit and have a lot of fun. I visited your website today and noticed you are approaching Rochester, Minnesota and are well on your way towards achieving your goal. I congratulate you! I certainly know the importance of staying fit and am very pleased to see young people like you taking a unique approach to daily fitness. Your goal of virtually running across America is a great example to your peers about staying fit and exercising regularly. As I am sure you have learned, the benefits of regular exercise and staying healthy are numerous. By developing and exercising healthy habits at your age, you will lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy living. Along with your virtual run across America, I would encourage you to encourage others to exercise and stay active. I will look forward to watching your progress on your website and wish you all the very best as you work towards your goal.

Conrad Burns

Dear 4th and 5th Grader Classes: Congratulations on meeting the half way mark on your unique challenge of virtually running/walking 3200 miles across America. It is wonderful to see 4th and 5th graders learning about nutrition and fitness. I see from the website that Montana is 11th for fit kids. I admire your determination to combine fitness with your goal to run/walk 3200 miles during the school year. Hopefully this will inspire other students to take the challenge. Keep up the good work of running/walking across America.

Russell Elementary 4th and 5th Graders: Keep up the pace. Time for a gut check -- you're half way home so there's no stopping now. Be strong. Help each other when you feel like falling down. Pick each other up when you do fall down. Whatever you do, keep up the pace!! I just know all of you will make it. PE Teachers across the country (via NASPE talk-digest) are cheering for you. You know you can make it the distance. You have to finish what you start so you can feel the pride. Keep up the pace!

WOW! I can not believe that the 5th graders are so far ahead of schedule! Way to go. Your self control of walking/running before hamburgers at the barbecue was very impressive. Bet the 4th graders will soon be up with the 5th grade. Also, thank you to the Missoula District One Schools for hiring Vicki as a P. E. Teacher. How fun to watch her with the students. Her abilities to motivate and interact with the kids is wonderful. One outstanding teacher!

Have a great time running through Iowa 4th Graders. It looks like you just might run through the town in which I was born (Independence, IA). On your way don't forget to look for the "Field of Dreams" outside of Dyersville, just a little east of your route on Highway 20.

Wow you all are doing a wonderful job working together to get across the country. Look how far you have walked/run!!! You have covered the Louis & Clark Trail backwards and still have energy for more!! My son & I will keep watching and cheering for you through the year. You've inspired us!!!

Theresa Rude

You guys are on the downhill side of things now and have shown amazing determination to get to this point! You all truly made this your own journey while Mrs. Staso was gone and you've continued on with that same attitude. This is something that you will look back on with wonderful memories and a huge sense of pride WHEN you all reach your goal! It's been an honor to be a part of such a wonderful program as a parent, but it's been an even greater honor to watch such an awesome group of kids strive to reach a goal. Remember to encourage each other and work as a team. YOU WILL ALL MAKE IT TO DELAWARE!!

Stacey Rossmiller

Fourth graders, You have to get on it. You're behind schedule again AND you've let the fifth graders get a WHOLE state ahead. You guys are capable of doing as much as the fifth graders. If they keep their pace, you may not catch them (but if you really work at it, you might). Fifth graders, keep up the good work!

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Dear Mrs. Staso and students: What a wonderful and unique program you are participating in. Your website is very informative and interesting. It looks like you are well on your way to completing the 3,200 mile run. I just want to encourage you to keep up the good work and when you have completed this program - keep running or walking! I know firsthand the importance of eating healthy and exercising. I began to eat healthy and exercise every day and lost over one hundred pounds. My goal was not just to lose weight, but to get healthy. I feel much better and I am much healthier - is is a "lifestyle change" for me and hopefully this run will be for each of you too. You are learning so much through this program; such as, how to work as a team, the benefits of exercise and some interesting things about each state you pass through. You will all be winners at the end of this run! God bless you and keep running and walking.

Mike Huckabee
Governor of the State of Arkansas

I had checked into your web site when you started and to say the least I am very impressed with your results. Each of you should be very proud of your progress as a member of a team, all striving to reach a common goal. When I kick off my 2006 Track season with my 4th and 5th grade girls I will tell them about your adventure. I hope your efforts will motivate my girls to a great season.

Come on 4th Graders! I know you can catch up with the 5th graders! It's finally turning spring so let's get out there and put some miles behind us! You're doing great and the states are going to start going by a lot faster!

Jan Bixler
Parent of 2 Participating 4th Graders

I've been meaning to write before this to tell you how proud I am of you and your dedication to your Run-Walk Across America. I have a former class-mate from the Old Willard School keeping me posted as to your progress, as I don't have a computer. You'll see by my address that I live on the route you took, about 65 miles out of Missoula. Boy, you breezed by here so fast, I didn't even have time to write and say howdy. You're probably through Iowa by now, with the end almost in sight. Keep up the good work, help your teammates along, and I'll be looking forward to your reaching the Atlantic.

A very proud, former Missoulian,

Skip Hayes
Helmville, Montana

I want to tell you how good you guys are doing! I wish I had gotten to do this last year! I really want to encourage the 4th grade students. You may be behind the 5th graders but you guys should really keep trying! You will always look back on this! When you look back on this you will want to remember how hard you worked. You wouldn't want to remember not working hard. So turn in the yellow slips and make this a moment you will never forget. You will probably never do this again unless you turn out to be like my dad [Mr. Staso]! 5th graders remember to keep encouraging the 4th graders and keep doing an awesome job!

Hi Kids, I'm so happy for you! Come on 4th graders "you can do it!" That's my running team's motto. I ran in a race and did my fastest time for the mile. 6:29! I ran 4 days a week all Fall and Winter. I ran sometimes for 35 minutes without stopping. I know "you can do it!" I did! Go 4th graders, don't give up, you'll catch them! Way to go 5th graders! Go go!

Keep up the pace, success and Delaware are within sight!!

You kids are great! The determination to make your goal is very impressive. I have watched you since you started and am so impressed with both the 4th and 5th graders. It has been exciting to see what you are doing at your school and I'm looking forward to watching your progress. My name is Ruth Wysocki and I have been a runner for almost 40 years. I ran for the United States in the Olympics in 1984. I got my start in running when I was about 10 years old, and I'm still doing it. I'm so thrilled to see your school make running fun when sometimes others make running a punishment. They are helping you enjoy something, set goals, and create a memory that will last a lifetime. Perhaps I'll be watching some of you run in races in years to come. My own son is in 4th grade, and I taught middle school PE for 6 years. I always encouraged running when I was teaching. Not only can almost anyone run, but you can feel like a winner even if you don't cross the finish line first just by accomplishing your goals and improving your times. Keep pushing toward that goal. I have no doubt that you'll make it! I will be watching your website to see how you're doing!

Hello, I cant believe how much farther you guys got. Just do it! (Nike) -- CJ

Hi! I really love the way you are doing this. I hope that you have a fun time doing it and will have great time. Bye! -- Iman

Hi, I am amazed how far you got. I'm just telling you to keep on going and do your best. -- Rebecca

I hope you're hanging on. I can't imagine how tired you are! -- Brian

I don't know how you have lasted so long. I know that I could never ever walk that long. Did I mention you have walked 3,200 miles? My feet would hurt for weeks if I walked that far. -- Savanna

You 4th graders are so close to your target place. I know you will go to your target! -- Genevieve

You kids have done an amazing job with this challenge. 5th graders, take a few minutes and encourage the 4th grade students. You were behind pace at one time. Let them know that they can catch up to pace. 4th graders, you have some unlimited miles available to you, take advantage of this and get ahead of pace. The weather is GREAT! Get your teachers to take you out for some quick runs/walks during the day. GREAT JOB, AND CONGRATULATIONS! Russell 4th and 5th grade students ROCK!

Diana Sontag
Parent of a Russell Elementary 5th Grade Student

Mrs. Sontag also sent this very nice note:

We are all so impressed by these students. They have taken on an amazing challenge, made it their own, and no doubt will reach the goal that has been set for them. These kids would not be doing this if it wasn't for Vicki and Paul Staso. I want to thank them for creating this project/challenge, and all the time and effort that they have put into it. You have created what will be a lifelong memory for these kids. I also want to take this opportunity to remind people that Paul is setting out on an amazing journey this summer and support is needed. Take a few minutes and send in a contribution or look at the lodging needed and see if you can help with that. Any size contribution will help. These kids need to know that their efforts have made a difference in peoples lives. Show this by contributing to Paul's P.A.C.E. Run 2006! Thanks so much Vicki and Paul, you are truly wonderful people!

We want to share with you an encouraging e-mail message that Paul Staso received from his nephew serving in Iraq:

Uncle Paul and Family: I am proud to see that you have made an effort to change lives. I am in awe at all the lives you have changed and the difference you are making. I would like to commend you on the great things you have already accomplished, the great things you are accomplishing, and the example you are setting for not only your family but for families across the Nation. As a soldier deployed in Iraq, it is nice to see the tradition of family, unity, and patriotism being carried out in our stead. May the wind be upon your back, and the ground soft beneath your feet. On Monday (April 17), I will be running in the Boston Marathon for the first time. It was something I have wanted to do since 1972. I have worked hard, training about 1500 - 2000 miles a year since 2003 and will finally be getting the chance. Running teaches you diligence and persistence, two qualities that go a long way in life. You guys are learning that. Keep up the good work! (Fourth grade, now that you are back on schedule, DON'T LET UP!)

WAY TO GO GUYS! It's amazing how far you have come this year, not just on your virtual trek but also as people! You've set your minds to meeting this challenge and you are obviously going to succeed. What a great example you guys are setting as young adults. I hope many more kids follow in your footsteps in personal growth AND running/walking across America. Before long these words of encouragement will be coming from all of you for Mr. Staso. I'm sure he will look to your success when rising to his challenge this summer.

Stacey Rossmiller

Wow kids, you are doing so great. Not only are you meeting your goal, but you are healthier kids for it. I hope you will keep walking and running this summer as an encouragement to the Staso's as Paul makes his run. Keep up the good work.

Hey, Fifth Graders! You guys are doing soooo good. We are almost to the finish line! I know we can make it! Everyone remember to turn in yellow slips. My dad has really been training hard because he thinks we are going to make it! I remember on the first day of school he was kinda questioning whether we were going to make it. Now there is not a doubt in his mind we can do it. So he is running a lot every day! We Proved Him Wrong! Keep on running!!!!!

For the past 8 months I've watched you run and walk each week, determined to reach the finish line at the Atlantic Ocean. This week, the 5th grade class did it! We are still cheering the 4th grade class on and look forward to the day (coming soon) that they will also complete the trek! Because the 5th grade class completed the journey by the last day of the school year, I will now run their route across America beginning June 23... for real. I am very proud of each and every student who has been a part of this amazing challenge. There have been many difficult days along the way, including: freezing temperatures, tired bodies, discouragement, and more. However, the 5th grade class has persevered to the finish line and has become the first individual elementary class to ever complete a virtual trek across the entire United States in one school year. That is quite an accomplishment for 41 students! It equates to an average of 78 miles per child, or the equivalent of 3 marathon distances, within 8 months. That's great for a bunch of 11 year olds! I will never forget watching the 5th graders cross the finish line on April 25, with the local television and news paper reporters on sight to capture the moment. There was so much excitement in the air... and silly string! I truly appreciate the 5th grade teachers (Mr. Creighton and Mrs. Kuchel) for encouraging the 5th graders throughout the school year. The extra class walks that they initiated truly helped the students to stay ahead of pace. Also, none of this would have been possible without my wife, Vicki, who is the P.E. teacher at Russell Elementary. She has done an amazing job at keeping the kids focused on the goal. I also appreciate the tireless and creative efforts of Stacey Rossmiller, Diana Sontag and Martha Robertson... three women who have made this experience truly wonderful. Throughout the year people have watched this trek via this web site and there have been notes of encouragement submitted each week from kids, parents, teachers, coaches, and so many others. I never imagined that this "virtual trek" would gain such attention and I am so happy that the 4th and 5th grade students at Russell Elementary School have been such an encouragement to so many people around the world. My daughter, Ashlin, and I created this curriculum to impact the lives of 96 students at her school. However, our little project has impacted the lives of so many people in so many different locations! That's awesome, and we're amazed and filled with satisfaction. Congratulations 5th graders and keep on running/walking 4th graders! I want the 4th grade class to keep a quote in mind. It is by Manuel Diotte: "Winning isn't always finishing first. Sometimes winning is just finishing.” You are all winners!

I think most of you know that I ran in the Boston Marathon last week. Unfortunately, I had a difficult race. Often it's the hard things that teach you the good lessons, and I think that was the case there with me. I'd like to thank those of you who wished me well at Boston, your words helped lift my spirits at times. I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable that BOTH classes will complete the trek. I sort of wish that if you complete it, you could take the ferry from Lewes, DE to Cape May, NJ and run through my state! (I don't know if that would be allowed, and I expect that Mr. Staso wouldn't be expected to complete it, even if you guys did that.) Now would be a good time to start to think about what you have learned on your trek. Keep moving forward!

A personal note to Paul and Vicki. I have so enjoyed this run across America with the Russell Students. The changes I have seen in the students since the start is so great. The growth, physical changes, and friendships that I have seen develop, the positive comments from Mike Creighton about the changes he has seen in his classroom setting. The list goes on and on! As a former Trustee of District One I am so proud of Vicki and very thankful we have her in our District. Especially teaching my grandchildren. I look forward to having Kaytlin be one of her students. We will be watching Paul on his run. Russell 4th and 5th graders are the best. Thank you so much for giving these kids a wonderful grade school memory. Hopefully it will carry on to Meadow Hill.

Dear Vicki and Russell Runners: You did it!!! Russell gives the term "cross country" a whole new meaning! Congratulations to Mr. Creighton's class and Ms. Kuchel's class for finishing the run ahead of schedule... and with a sprint! Congratulations also to Mrs. Staso for all her hard work this year, to Mr. Staso for being the good sport he is, and last, but not least, congratulations to the fourth graders who cheered you on and will will be reaching Lewes, Delaware, themselves in the next few weeks! What a great journey you all had this year! In addition to making you stronger and faster, it taught you a great deal about the geography and history of our country. You strengthened your legs and your lungs, but your math and spelling skills grew too. Talk about multitasking! That's why this was such an awesome undertaking. Have a wonderful summer, everyone. And keep on running!

Way to go 4th grade!! The Atlantic Ocean is in sight and you have persevered! This trek has certainly been difficult at times, and one that you may never repeat in your lifetime. However, as you cross the finish line next Tuesday I hope you'll truly feel the satisfaction that comes with meeting a very challenging goal. What you've accomplished is definitely not easy, and that's what makes you so special. You kept chasing after the goal both as individuals and as a class... and now it is in reach. You've gone coast to coast, across 15 states, 4 time zones, 3,200 miles, and through the heart of America. You are all winners, and I hope that you'll always cherish this accomplishment.

We are so proud of each student that was involved in this year's Run/Walk Across America program. All of you did an awesome job and now you will always have this memory of virtually crossing the continent. It is our hope that you learned something about yourself and that you developed greater fitness and a stronger desire to be more conscious of your health. You have inspired many people through your efforts and you need to know that your steps not only impacted your own lives, but those of children, teachers, parents, and others nationwide. This web site will remain online as an example to other educators of how to organize a virtual running/walking curriculum. During the course of this year several schools around the country have adopted our curriculum and are "virtually" trekking to various locations. We are thrilled at the ripple effect our little curriculum stone has caused in the pond of physical education. However, regardless of how "successful" the program was, it is YOU... the students... who are to be congratulated. Even though we kept track of the 4th and 5th grades' progress separately, when combining the efforts of both classes you took 13,440,000 steps... traveling 6,400 miles. When examining those statistics in light of the number of students involved in the program (97 kids), that averages out to be 66 miles per student, or the equivalent of 2˝ marathons per child. And you accomplished all of that within 8 months, running and walking in temperatures ranging from below-zero up to 90 degrees. What an amazing feat... or should we say "feet"?! Along the way you received letters of encouragement from governors, senators, world record holders, and so many others - and you gained the attention of the local media on several occasions. You received letters from Canada, Africa, Europe, Australia, and elsewhere. We heard from people who were inspired to get off of their couches and start a walking or running program. Although we never set out to have this program gain such attention, your efforts were truly inspiring and the further you got across the country the more people were touched by your determination and perseverance. In years to come we hope that you'll look back on this and truly realize what you accomplished as a group, and as individuals. We congratulate you and we feel very fortunate to have had an opportunity to be a part of this wonderful project. Keep running and walking and be sure to always look for new goals on the horizon!

I guess this is the last encouragement I get to send. If everything goes right, the fourth graders finish today, so EVERYONE IS DONE! You've achieved your goal! Congratulations! Making progress is important, but getting done is the thing that matters. You all did it, and did it together, working as a team. Congratulate each other and thank your co-runners/walkers for their contribution to covering the distance.

Russell 4th and 5th grade classes of 2005-2006 are in a word AMAZING!!! You all set your mind to achieving the goal that was set and never faltered! 4th grade: You battled back after being behind schedule and even finished ahead of pace. You've proven to yourselves that if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. 5th grade: You got back on track at Christmas and never looked back! You've all made every mile of this trek your own and have shown what remarkable young people you are. While other schools across the nation are trying to keep their students out of trouble, you guys at Russell are proving that there are truly AWESOME kids out there in this world! I'm proud to say I've know most of you since kindergarten and you've grown to wonderful young adults! Each and everyone of you enjoy your summer and KEEP ON WALKING/ RUNNING! Mr. Staso will be through Missoula in July, and we want all of you to escort him into town! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!

YOU DID IT! CONGRATULATIONS! It's remarkable what you can do when you work together as a team. Have you learned anything about fitness from this year? What about eating right? Will any of you keep walking or running this summer? What about next year? (I hope Mrs. Staso asks these questions and for a show of hands of who will be continuing to stay active.)
