MILEAGE THIS WEEK:
5TH GRADE = 55
MILES
/ 4TH GRADE = 31¾
MILES Both teams logged mileage this week and are making impressive gains in this trek. In fact, the 4th graders only have 675 miles left to go in order to finish this 2,266-mile journey. The 5th graders only have 866 miles remaining before they cross the finish line. The 5th graders are now in Hoquiam, Washington (population around 10,000) and are about to turn north to begin a northerly run toward Olympic National Park. Hoquiam is the home of the internationally acclaimed Loggers' Playday, celebrated with a parade and logging competition every September. The name of the town is taken from a Native-American language meaning "hungry for wood". The 4th graders are now in Gardiner, Washington. Gardiner is primarily a rural-residential community. It has a few retail establishments, a community center, and a church, all located on U.S. Route 101. There is still some farming, lumbering, and fishing, but the area is following the Jefferson County trend away from agriculture, as old homesteads and family farms get subdivided into residences. The updates to this web site between now and April 8th will be minimal because Mr. Staso, who does the updating of this site, will be doing his 500-mile run through Germany. To follow his progress, just go to www.pacetrek.com/germany. After he returns, the team positions will be fully updated! While Mr. Staso is running, both the 4th and 5th grade students will continue to accumulate mileage for both the Parks Run as well as P.A.C.E. Trek Germany. Keep reaching for those mileposts! |
