RUN!WEEK 19 (click here to go to the next week)

January 18-24, 2010

Who's Leading? The 4th Graders lead by 255 miles.

MILEAGE THIS WEEK: 5TH GRADE = 65¾ MILES  /  4TH GRADE = 34¾ MILES

TOTAL MILEAGE TO DATE:
5TH GRADE = 1,157½ MILES  /  4TH GRADE = 1,412½ MILES

The big news this week is that the 5th graders are now over halfway done with this journey! They've completed 51% of the route so far. Good job 5th graders! The 4th grade team has completed 62% of the distance and are currently ahead of the 5th graders by 255 miles.

Let's get an update on where the teams are. The 5th graders are now near Toppenish, Washington and are around 135 miles away from Mount Rainier National Park. Based on their average distance per week, they should reach Mount Rainier National Park on February 8. They are currently running near the Yakima River, which is a tributary of the Columbia River. The Yakima River goes for 214 miles and is used for irrigating pastures, orchards, grapes, hops, and field crops. It's also popular for kayaking and rafting.

The 4th graders are now 5 miles past Humptulips, Washington. They are only about 12 miles away from the Pacific Ocean. There are likely seagulls flying around near them! The town of Humptulips, which they just ran through, is a tiny town of around 200 people. The name Humptulips may have come from a local Native American language, meaning 'hard to pole', referring to the difficulty local Native Americans had poling their canoes along the Humptulips River. According to other sources the word means 'chilly region'. Another possibility is that Humptulips was the name of a band of the Chehalis tribe.

Both teams are making great progress! The 4th graders have 853 miles left to go before finishing the journey. The 5th graders have 1,109 miles left to run and walk before reaching the finish line at Glacier National Park in Montana. Check back next week to get an update on their progress.
