It looks like the Halloween candy of last week didn't slow
down the 5th graders at all. This week they took the lead by
logging nearly 35 miles more than the 4th graders. Of
course, we applaud the efforts of the 5th grade teachers for
taking the kids out on the park loop to add more distance to
the miles the kids put in during P.E. class this week! The
teachers know that they can take the students out for a
walk/run to add distance to the
Route 66 challenge.
Currently, the 5th grade classes are in Phillipsburg,
Missouri - a small "village" of about 227 people. This is a
place that has experienced two major tornadoes of a category
4 ranking. Category 4 tornadoes have wind speeds of up to
260 miles per hour. Their worst tornado was in 1991 and it
killed 2 people and injured 64 others in the area of
Phillipsburg. So, it's suggested that the 5th graders run
quickly through this area or they might get a tail wind that
they don't want!
The 4th grade classes are 12 miles from Lebanon, Missouri.
They are currently 23½ miles behind the 5th graders. They
ended their week next to a cemetery near the very small town
of Riverview. This week was not one of seeing many
interesting sights along Route 66 for any of the kids. This
section of road is pretty empty without many roadside
attractions. However, both grades are quickly approaching
Buena Vista's Exotic Animal Paradise, which has many wild
animals and rare birds. This special animal park has been in
existence for 35 years and has zebras, camels, bison,
African lions, a white tiger, and more. In all, the park has
1,500 animals.
This week we finally receive the approval we've been waiting
for to post student pictures on this web site! So, please be
checking the web site for
new photos.
We've put a few class photos on for the month of September
and will be adding many more in the coming days. All of the
autumn leaves have now fallen and we've had daytime
temperatures in the mid-50s. The weather has been pretty
nice this autumn, but this is Montana and the winter snows
could come at any time.
For those who are wondering how much longer it will be
before the state of Missouri is completed, the 5th graders
have 118 miles left in Missouri and the 4th graders have
141½ miles remaining. So, both classes have at least two
more weeks in this state. Once they reach Kansas, the next
state, they're in for a treat because Route 66 goes through
only 13 miles of Kansas' southeast corner!
Only 11 more days until Thanksgiving! The kids need to
gobble up the miles!
NOTE:
The students haven't received
many notes of encouragement and could really use some, so
please click on this link and share your thoughts with the
kids!
