This week both grades continued to make progress through the
state of Illinois. In fact, the 4th grade class only has
about 50 miles left before they enter Missouri! Currently,
the 4th graders are virtually in
Litchfield, Illinois.
Litchfield has three miles of the original Route 66 highway,
which passes through the west side of the town. Several
original businesses date back to 1924 and are still located
on the famous road
─
such as
The Ariston Cafe, a registered National
Historic Landmark. The
5th grade class is halfway between the Illinois towns of
Springfield
and Litchfield. They're only 22 miles behind the 4th grade
class.
When we started the virtual trek along Route 66 we set the
target finish date of April 11, 2008. In order to accomplish
that, the classes need to average 80 miles per week. So far,
they are behind pace for finishing the trek by the April
11th target date. This is due, in part, to the
FitnessGram
testing that they were required to do at the beginning of
this new school year. Currently, both grades are about 270
miles behind pace for finishing on April 11. If each grade
were to average 80 miles per week from here on, the new
finish date would be May 9, 2008. The hope is to have the
students done with the Route 66 virtual trek challenge prior
to April 28, 2008 when they will be involved in a 17-day
race against Mr. Staso as he runs solo across Montana. His
"P.A.C.E. Trek 2008" will be an opportunity for the kids to
be involved in a challenge right along with Mr. Staso and
learn some interesting things about Montana, running and
walking through his extensive P.A.C.E. Trek web site at
www.pacetrek.com.
So, it would be great if the kids could have the Route 66
trek wrapped up prior to April 28, 2008.
We are STILL waiting for some signed parental permission
sheets to be turned into Mrs. Staso so that we can post
pictures of the kids on this web site. We know that many of
you are waiting to see pictures of the kids, and we have
some great pictures to post on this web site. However, until
we have the signed media releases in hand, we cannot post
pictures of the children on this web site. We are truly
trying to obtain the final signed sheets so that we can post
pictures! Please keep checking back to this site.
The kids sure would enjoy receiving more notes of
encouragement. There has been very few notes posted at this
web site for the kids, and if you would like to do so you
can by
clicking here!
Encouragement is certainly fuel to help the kids continue to
make it down the road toward Los Angeles. Thanks for taking
a moment to encourage them!
Any trek, whether it be virtual or real, is certainly a
challenge. The 4th and 5th grade students at Russell
Elementary are in a challenging journey and we welcome any
and all ideas and assistance that can be offered to help the
students succeed. Perhaps you have an idea for encouraging
the kids, or for making their journey more special. If so,
please contact Mrs. Staso at Russell Elementary and share
your thoughts. This is a unique opportunity that these
students have, and we want it to be the best virtual trek
possible. Thanks for stopping by for a visit!
