This week was an opportunity for the 4th and 5th grade
classes to run a timed mile to see where they are currently
at in their aerobic/endurance ability. Each child received
an individual time, and we thought it would be interesting
to average the times together by grade to see how long it
took each class (on average) to run one mile. The
average time for the 4th grade class was 12 minutes, 14
seconds per mile. The average time for the 5th grade class
was 14 minutes, 38 seconds per mile. The difference between
the averages is 2 minutes, 24 seconds
─
meaning that the 4th grade class, as a whole, ran the mile
nearly 2½ minutes faster than the 5th grade class.
For those wondering, there were 41 forth graders who ran the
mile and 40 fifth graders who ran the mile. The 4th grade
class had 22 boys and 19 girls run the timed mile, and the
5th grade class had 17 boys and 23 girls run the timed mile.
Also, it needs to be noted that of the 5th grade students
there was one who had just had a cast taken off of his foot
and another who had an injured knee. The kids will do a
timed mile periodically during the school year to measure
their amount of improvement.

So, where are the kids currently
on Route 66? Both grades are still in the state of Illinois.
The 4th grade class is in the town of
Lincoln, Illinois,
population 16,000. Lincoln is the only town in the United
States named for and by
Abraham Lincoln before he became
president. He practiced law there from 1847-1859. The 5th
graders are about 10 miles past
Bloomington, Illinois.
Bloomington is slightly larger than Missoula, the kids'
hometown. Bloomington has a population of about 75,000 and
is the host of the
Illinois Shakespeare Festival,
which is nationally known as one of the top Shakespearean
festivals in the country.
We've had several people inquire as to where the pictures of
the kids are. We are still waiting for several parents to
sign and turn in the papers necessary for us to be able to
post the children's pictures on this web site. Permission
must be received before we can do so. If you are a parent of
a participating child and have not turned in the media
permission sheet, please do so.
While virtually on Route 66 this
week, the kids ran through
Funks Grove,
a small community where some of the best pure
maple syrup is
produced. The Funk family has been selling the wonderful
syrup since 1891. We've included below a couple of pictures
of some BIG roadside items the kids have already run and
walked past.
As always, thanks for reading!
