The kids are now on Christmas vacation until January 2,
2008! Each class was able to complete at least one-third of
the Route 66 challenge before Christmas. They still have
about 1,500 miles left to go. Currently, the 4th graders are
ahead of the 5th graders by 59 miles. The 5th grade classes
managed to log 23 more miles than the 4th graders this week.
That helped to close the gap a little bit between the
classes.
Currently, the 4th graders are in Wellston, Oklahoma - where
they'll be virtually spending their Christmas holiday.
Wellston is a very small town of 851 people. On May 3, 1999,
a category 5 tornado 30 miles away from Wellston's town
center killed 36 people and injured 583 people, causing
millions of dollars in damages. Wellston's elevation is 899
feet - which is about 2,300 feet lower than Missoula.
The 5th graders went into their Christmas vacation in
Kellyville, Oklahoma. Only 921 people live in Kellyville and
the town is about 20 miles away from Tulsa, Oklahoma - the
2nd largest city in the state of Oklahoma. Many people
living in Kellyville work in Tulsa.
Each of the classes have the opportunity to log quite a few
miles over the Christmas vacation, as we explained in last
week's journal entry. We'll have to wait and see how many
miles they walk and run over the break. The weather for the
next week is supposed to be rather chilly (below freezing)
with more snow coming to the Missoula valley.
We wish all of the students and their families a merry
Christmas. See you in 2008!
