 Welcome to P.A.C.E.
Trek 2009!
The adventure begins
in P.A.C.E. is Promoting Active Children
Everywhere and this web site features a FREE fitness and education
challenge to children worldwide for April 22 through May 13, 2009 by ultra-endurance athlete Paul
Staso. During the summer of 2006 Paul accomplished a solo 3,260-mile, 15 state coast-to-coast
Run Across America to keep a promise to elementary kids in his
hometown of Missoula, Montana. He averaged 30 miles per day for 108
days, pushing his gear in a jogging stroller nicknamed "Bob"
(Beast of Burden). During spring 2008 Paul
accomplished the inaugural P.A.C.E. Trek, a 620-mile solo
Run Across Montana
in 20 running days
─
from the Great Plains to the top
of the Northern Rocky Mountains. There were 8,000 children from 8
countries involved in that trek, cumulatively logging
more than 42,000 miles in 3 weeks! Beginning April 22, 2009 Paul
will once again take kids on a virtual trek
─
this time it's an amazing 3-week walking/running/learning adventure
through the wilds of Alaska... the state where Paul grew up as a
boy! A
P.A.C.E. Trek 2009 Press Release
is available.

Your students will get
more fit by walking and running virtually with
Paul through the state of Alaska
─
which is
known as "The Last Frontier",
because of its opportunities and lightly settled regions, and
the "Land of the Midnight Sun", because the sun shines nearly around
the clock during the summer. They can track Paul's
progress through this web site and virtually 'race' him by
adding up their weekly walking/running mileage. Through Paul's
journal entries, pictures, videos and audio files posted at this
site during the trek, kids will learn more
about health, fitness, goal setting, teamwork, endurance, and a lot
about magnificent Alaska. Paul will encounter the Arctic Circle,
Denali National Park, Canada's border, glaciers, native villages,
vast wilderness, truly wild wildlife, and more... including
the Santa Claus House at North Pole... during his
500-mile, three-week trek through the heart of Alaska.

This FREE educational adventure should require no more than
10
minutes per day for 16 school days for participating teams (April 22
through May 13, 2009). For a classroom, that's a
commitment of less than 3 hours for the journey
─
or about an hour per week! It's up to each team leader
to decide how much time will be devoted to the P.A.C.E. Trek
challenge. Students participate in the trek by acquiring running and
walking mileage at school (such as in P.E. class, recess or some
other time). Also, some extracurricular sports mileage is allowed.
All of the details can be found through this site's menu options for
your students' level in school. Paul will average 33
miles for each day he's on the road
─
which is more than a marathon per day. About 8,000 students in the U.S.A.
and overseas participated in P.A.C.E. Trek 2008, including: U.S.A.,
Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, and United
Kingdom. Based on the number of inquiries received, we expect many
more teams for this trek!

Paul
Staso is a former 5th grade teacher who is committed to encouraging
children toward greater health and fitness, and the pursuit of their
goals and dreams. His unique approach is to use his ultra-endurance
abilities to get kids running, walking and learning through
long-distance journeys. Paul believes that through this combination
of fitness and learning students experience places
beyond their
school boundaries in a unique and challenging way. Through each
endurance trek he undertakes Paul aims to teach children a simple
idea: If you take care of your body it can take you on some
wonderful adventures. P.A.C.E. is about getting kids physically
active... learning about new places... setting goals... working as
teams toward a goal... and encouraging children to think about what they might achieve in
life! Let's Go! |
