Learn Something Today About Germany...

Today's route ended in the town of Haßfurt (English: Hassfurt) – a town of about 14,000 people in Bavaria. It is situated on the river Main. Here you can find the Hassfurt Bridge, which is thought to be the first Cantilever bridge built. Cantilevers are structures that project horizontally into space and supported on only one end. Along the way today, the route went through Walsdorf (a tiny town of about 3,000 people). Also, Priesendorf  was a part of the 22-mile day. Priesendorf is a tiny community of about 1,500 people in the Steigerwald (forest) on the small river Aurach. Several forests were encountered today. German forests directly or indirectly employ about 1.3 million people – compared to 750,000 in what many Germans see as their primary industry, cars, and compared to 810,000 in electronics and 465,000 in the chemical industry. Germany has the highest volume of tree wood of any European country, though Finland, Sweden and Austria may be better known for their woods. This resource is extremely valuable for the environment and precious for many industries, such as tourism and timber. Yet experts warn that the situation is critical and up to 20% of all trees in German forests are sick.

Learn Something Today About Health & Fitness...

The percentage of overweight and obese kids and teens has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Although many factors contribute to this problem, children are becoming more sedentary. In other words, they're sitting around a lot more than they used to. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child is watching about 3 hours of television each day, and spends 5½ hours on all screen media combined (TV, videos/DVDs, computer time outside of schoolwork, and video games). Parents, listen up! One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or playing video games. So, how much exercise is enough? All kids 2 years and older should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most, preferably all, days of the week.

Did You Know?

Eating too much carbohydrate-rich and fatty food makes you overweight. To stay in shape and at the right weight, you should eat these foods only in moderate amounts, and exercise regularly to ensure your body is efficient at burning off any excess. Carbohydrates are foods such as sugars and starches, found in abundance in foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, and sweet things. They are the body's main source of energy along with fats. Fats are greasy food that won't dissolve in water. Some are solid, such as meat fat and cheese. Others, such as corn oil, are liquid. Fats are not only used by the body as energy stores, but are a source of vitamins D and E. Too much fat not only makes you fat, but too much "saturated" fat (mainly animal fat such as butter) can boost the risk of heart disease. ______________________________________________________________________________
