Something Today About Germany...
Today's short 10-mile day ended in Bitburg,
population around 15,000. On December 24, 1944, Bitburg was 85%
destroyed by air raids. Bitburg Air Base (1952-1994) was a front-line
NATO base during the Cold War. It is located 2 miles (3 km) southeast of
Bitburg. It was the official home of the United States Air Force 36th
Fighter Wing for over 40 years as part of the United States Air Forces
in Europe. It was turned over to the German government on October 1,
1994. Bitburg Air Base was where Neil Armstrong, the first man on the
moon, began his piloting career. Bitburg Air Base Base Housing is
currently serving as housing for part of the Spangdahlem Air Base and
the Bitburg Annex contingents. The base housing is also provided for a
nearby Army base in Butzweiler. Bitburg High School is the American high
school located on the base, with the mascot being the Barons. There is
also a middle school, and their mascot is the bobcat.

Something Today About Health & Fitness...
It's important for all non-obese kids to
read this section. Professor Paul Gateley, who leads the Carnegie Weight
Management Program, surveyed 100 clinically obese children (ages 8
to 17).
Here is what he and his team found:
29% of the children saw eating too much junk food as the cause of their
problem.
59% claimed that managing
food portion sizes was the main reason for their
heavy weight.
60% feel that they get no support in overcoming their weight issues at
school.
42% say they have been subjected to bullying.
58% think their body weight will prevent them from getting a
boyfriend/girlfriend. And, a similar
percentage worried that their
weight would prevent them from pursuing their dream career.
As a non-obese child, what can you do to
help kids at your school who are battling weight? What can you learn
from the survey results above that can help you avoid becoming obese? Is
there something that you're doing that is adding to the burden of
someone who is overweight or obese?
All of us want to be treated kindly and encouraged
in our lives.

Did
You Know?
Kids tend to grow a bit faster in the spring
than during other times of the year.
No child grows at a
perfectly steady rate throughout childhood. Weeks or months of slightly
slower growth alternate with mini "growth spurts" in normal children. A
major growth spurt occurs between age 8 to 13 years in girls and 10 to
15 years in boys. By the time girls reach age 15 and boys reach age 16
or 17, growth will have ended for most teens and they will have reached
physical maturity. ______________________________________________________________________________
