Something Today About Germany...
Today I want to tell you about a town called
Gemunden am Main. During the time of the National Socialist régime, the Jewish community’s
synagogue was destroyed on Kristallnacht (November 9, 1938) by SA men.
During the Second World War, many Soviet prisoners of war had to perform
forced labor in operations that were important to the war effort. Due
to the town’s strategically important location, two-thirds of it was
destroyed by Allied bombing raids towards the end of World War II.
Today, there are the "Scherenburgfestspiele" (festival) in July and
August in the inner courtyard at the Scherenburg castle ruins. "Heimatfest"
is a local festival held every year on the fairgrounds. It is always
held during the summer months (usually June or July) and is a great
opportunity to experience small-town German culture and customs. It is
very much a scaled-down version of the world-famous Oktoberfest (held
at the end of September every year in Munich) with rides, games, and
much more. It is always one week in length (from Saturday to the
following Sunday), concluding in a fireworks display from the
Scherenburg castle ruins.

Something Today About Health & Fitness...
A number of factors contribute to becoming
overweight. Genetics, lifestyle habits, or a combination of both may be
involved. In some instances, endocrine problems, genetic syndromes, and
medications can be associated with excessive weight gain. Much of what
we eat is quick and easy – from fat-laden fast food to microwave and
prepackaged meals. Daily schedules are so jam-packed that there's little
time to prepare healthier meals or to squeeze in some exercise. Portion
sizes, in the home and out, have grown greatly. Plus, now more than ever
life is sedentary – kids spend more time playing with electronic
devices, from computers to handheld video game systems, than actively
playing outside. Television is a major culprit. Many kids don't get
enough physical activity. Although physical education (PE) in schools
can help kids get up and moving, more and more schools are eliminating
PE programs or cutting down the time spent on fitness-building
activities. One study showed that gym classes offered third-graders just
25 minutes of vigorous activity each week.

Did
You Know?
People get sick by one of two causes: (1) an
internal failure of one of the body's mechanisms; or (2) invading
microbes or germs. This is where the immune system comes in. The body's
immune system not only identifies the germs, but fights them with many
different chemical and biological weapons – including the tough "immune
cells". Only the very worst diseases can defeat the body's immune
system. There are literally thousands of different antibodies in the
blood, each targeted against a particular "antigen" (invader). A single
"macrophage" (giant eater) T cell can eat up to 100 bacteria. Your body
is truly designed to go to battle for you! ______________________________________________________________________________
