How Did All Of This Get Started?

In July 2005, Paul Staso had a bedtime discussion with his then 10-year-old daughter, Ashlin, about the fitness level of kids today. Ashlin suggested that they try to come up with an idea to get the kids in her class more fit. Since Mrs. Staso was the P.E. teacher at Ashlin's elementary school it was decided that during the 2005-2006 school year the 4th and 5th grade students at Russell Elementary in Missoula, Montana would be two teams virtually racing 3,200 miles across America by adding up their walking and running mileage in P.E. each week. As a motivating element, Paul promised that if either class could finish the challenge within the 9-month school year that he would run their route for real... solo. The kids ultimately succeeded, and so did Paul. You can see the kids' full story online at www.seeusrun.com and the fulfillment of Paul's promise to actually run across America at www.pacerun.com. Since 2006 Paul has been organizing P.A.C.E. journeys so that kids around the world can experience a virtual fitness/education trek. What began with 97 students now involves thousands of children each year from numerous countries around the globe. Below is a television news story about the 5th grade class finishing first on April 25, 2006.
