Yes...
I am currently in Canada! Let
me begin this journal entry by saying if you
haven't seen the videos and music slideshow from
yesterday's
posting, you really need to do that.
In particular, the
2-minute
music slideshow
features some interesting pictures of
Southeast Alaska that I took while traveling
yesterday. It was an awesome day and in a remote part of
the Canadian Yukon I managed to upload all of the information
to this web site that I wanted to.
However, today is going to be a different story.
Today my parents
will continue to transport me farther north
through Canada in order to get me to the Alaska
border where Highway 2 touches Canada. Teachers
should be able to point that out to students on
a map. I will be spending this evening in a
truck camper at the Alaska/Canada border and
will not have access to the Internet, and likely
no cellular phone service. So, you'll have to be
patient to learn about the happenings of this
day. I'll post information just as soon as I
can. I hope that everyone has been enjoying
their running and walking. Today is my last day
off before I begin a strenuous stretch of
running. In fact, over the next 4 days I'll run
137 miles, averaging a little more than 34 miles
per day.
A
Quick Note About Sending Me Messages...
If you
want to send me a message, please do that
through my
guestbook.
I'm receiving a lot of messages from children
through my "Contact Paul" page and ask that kids
don't use that page to write to me. That page is
really only for adults or media people so that
they have a way to send me a message. I can't
possibly answer all of the messages that I'm
receiving from children. So, if you're a child
please only use my guestbook
to send me a message. Thank you!
Hello From The Alaska/Canada Border!
Hello
from the Alaska/Canada border. Today was a
140-mile drive from Destruction Bay to the
border and although the skies were not as blue
today as yesterday, it was still a beautiful
drive. My parents and I had our second wolf
sighting and tried to get some pictures. Aside
from that, we have not seen any wildlife. Upon
arriving at the border we went through customs
and then stopped at the Border Crossing Lodge
where they had a place for us to park the truck
camper for the evening. Tomorrow morning I will
begin a 30-mile run to Northway Junction (see
map). My parents will drive out of sight and
I'll once again be alone on the road with "Bob"
- my trusty stroller! I spent time this
afternoon building Bob (I had to take it apart
to transport it on the ferry and by vehicle up
to this point). So, Bob is ready to roll and I'm
ready to run. The weather is really good. In
fact, as I write this it is 4:30 p.m. on
Thursday, April 23, and the temperature outside
is 54 degrees! That's probably not the
temperature report you expected from Alaska, but
it is actually that warm. The snow is slowly
melting and the roads are dry and clear. The
nights are still getting rather cold (in the
mid-20 degree range), but the days have been
very nice. However, this is Alaska and things
can change quickly here. You'll just have to
read my journal each day to see if I run into
any snowstorms. In fact, I just found out that
it is supposed to get down to 25 degrees tonight
with a 40% chance of rain/snow showers tomorrow
and a high of 45 degrees. I do not have cell phone
reception again tonight, so I cannot call my
family. I miss hearing the voices of my wife and
children and hope to be able to talk to them
soon. I've posted some pictures in the
right-hand column from my past couple of days
traveling. Be sure to click on those to see
larger images.
It's Time For Today's "Nugget of
Knowledge"
This year
(2009) is Alaska's 50th anniversary as
the 49th state of the United States! On
January 3, 1959 Alaska entered the Union
of the USA. The U.S. Senate approved the
purchase of Alaska from the Russian
Empire on March 30, 1867, for $7.2
million at 2 cents per acre. The land
went through several administrative
changes before becoming an organized
territory on May 11, 1912 and the 49th
state of the U.S. in 1959. Do you know
what very warm state became the 50th
state of the USA?
That's all from this
Alaska milepost! Thanks for stopping by and be
sure to run back here tomorrow.

Roughly 40% of U.S. school districts
either have eliminated recess or are
considering eliminating it.
FamilyEducation.com conducted a poll via
the Internet which asked the question,
"Should schools be allowed to ban
recess?" They received thousands of
responses and 94% of respondents said
"No". Also, many schools across America
have eliminated commonly accepted
playground equipment, such as swings,
merry-go-rounds, tether ball, tube
slides, track rides, arch climbers,
teeter-totters, and more.
